Poker Table Playing Surface

So I want to make a poker table and I am not sure what to do for the playing surface. Most of the people with plans use 1/2" padding then put velveteen on top, but I was thinking about using neoprene and thought it'd be easier cause its like a mouse pad and would not need any other work.

Searched for anyone making a table with neoprene and found a guy who bought neoprene for padding underneath and put speed cloth over. What is the point of that?

Any input?

  • Personally, I found 1/2" too much. Just went with the 1/4" batten from Fabricland. And you don't need speedcloth either, too much money. Not sure what it was I bought, but it wasn't expensive and the cards slide nicely just the same. I"ll find out when I get home what its called and edit this post late.

Neoprene is not necessary, unless you plan on taking it on your next fishing trip or something.
  • I can see neoprene "nicking up". Had swim trunks years ago that were neoprene, and thats why they were short lived. Trust me, there will be more hands on your table than were EVER on those trunks. lol
  • Guys,

You dont really need the 1/2" padding underneath if you are using Volara (generally accepted as the most common padding). The 1/4" will do just fine with your cloth over top of it. I use the 3/8" volara for all of my racetrack styled tables but never for full playing surface ones....

Diamond suited speed cloth is the best looking fabric and has the best gliding for cards but it is totally up to you what you put on top of the cloth.

Velveteen works ok for a while but after a few games you will notice pilling of the fabric and wished you would have spent the extra money and gotten a quality fabric in the first place....
  • does anyone know where to order 1/4" Volara thick closed cell foam padding in Canada? Perhaps a brick and mortar store in the GTA even?

EDIT: nevermind, just discovered Crummer Poker Supplies - Foam
  • I use the foam underlay for laminate floors. Cheap, easy to find, and works great.

Speedcloth is by far the nicest...and it isn't expensive..I think the last table I did, it was 15 bucks? Depending on the size of the table, it may not be necessary, but it sure looks good, feels good, and the cards slide nice. Go to the extra effort of tracking some down.
