Legality of Bar Poker in Ontario

anybody know the nuances?

  • ya. illegal. and lame.
  • in a nutshell, if the players have not paid anything to play in the tournament, it is fine (i.e. RHPT). Even if there is no rake for the bar, once the players pay to play, its illegal (as the bar is profiting indirectly from the drinks, meals). If there is a rake for the house, its illegal. Home games with a rake, are also illegal.

this is the key point. cops don't care but the owner is likely to lose his liquor license. plus my 53o never holds up.

not to get off topic, but I am finding these days that I make a lot of money with 64o, 35o, 25o.
  • i find i'm getting outdrawn frequently by some idiot who can't let go of his 25o

I found at Las Vegas that I lost a lot of money with AA (cracked three times), so does anybody know a poker coach who can teach me to fold them pre-flop? ;)

To get back on topic, the AGCO does consider even the freeroll bar poker tours to be illegal. A couple of the bar tours, including what used to be the biggest nationwide tour, were forced to shut down after a visit from an inspector. There seems to be an AGCO bylaw that prohibits playing cards in a licensed establishment. So if you are playing Go Fish with your child at a licensed restaurant, it is more likely to lose its liquor license than from the scam artists gambling at the pool table!

Unless Canadian poker players form an organization similar to the US' Poker Players Alliance to lobby the politicians, the silly laws against the skill game of poker will never change.
  • Blondefish, do you know anyone who's trying to start an organization like that in Canada?
