Who Ratted Him Out?

David "Chino" Rheem, who played poker in South Florida in the early 2000s, beat out 6,835 players to make the final table in the World Series of Poker's main event.
Eight years ago in Broward County, Rheem was convicted of dealing in stolen property and burglary, both felonies, as well as larceny and possession of marijuana, court records show. He was sentenced to four months jail time and 30 months probation.

He also failed to appear in court on a 2003 misdemeanor trespassing charge in Hollywood, according to state criminal records, leading to a court order for his arrest. The warrant for his arrest remains active.

Rheem could not be reached for comment. Neither Rheem's main sponsor, PokerStars.net, nor World Series officials said they knew of Rheem's background.

WORST BAD BEAT IN THE HISTORY OF POKER !
I'M ALSO GUESSING IT WAS ONE OF THE 9 FINAL PLAYERS THAT RATTED HIM OUT!

  • This begs the question...so?

I'm sure WSOP officials don't look into any player's background. And there's no condition in the rules saying they have to be crime free. Although its interesting, it has no bearing on the game, nor the outcome.

No, I caught that. My question still is so what? Unless he's going to be in jail for his offense, there's no reason for him NOT to play in November.

And it is only a misdemeanor, nothing serious.
  • The states is messed up though... if he has priors he might receive jail time for this offence.
  • He's very good friends with the Grinder. Sucks that a failure to appear for a misdemeanor like trespassing can stop him from playing (he already served his time for the previous offences).
  • For a misdemeanor, he'll do minimum if any at all. And with his 9th place money, I'm sure his lawyer can stall for a year or so.
  • I am pretty sure it wasn't his fellow tablemates that ratted him out.

My bet would be on the press. With the popularity of the final table participation this year, I am sure that the press would have run their names through for any other information on the players.

Dig far enough, you'll find dirt on anyone. The press now has four months to find every unpaid ticket or jaywalking offence these guys ever did, and they'll exploit whatever they find if they can. After all, SHOCK news is much better for sales.
