Non tournament heads up ...

Lets say for a non tournament (no limit) holdem game 2 players end up heads up pre flop.

Are they both required to flip their cards as the community cards are delt?

  • In my experience, no. Stars doesn't show the hands until the entire board is dealt, if you want to use that as a point of reference. There's really no reason not to, though, so I'm sure that most home games flip their cards for the purposes of dramatic effect.

There was a time when even in tournaments, the cards weren't revealed until the end of the hand. Furthermore, one player could then flip his hand, and the other could muck his, if he lost. I believe this was changed to prevent collusion of a 'chip-dumping' sort. Since chip-dumping isn't a factor in cash games, the rule was never changed, which means that at places like Stars (and I imagine in casinos as well) the hole cards stay hidden until the end.
