Huge adrenaline responses

I've recently started having huge adrenaline responses (HAR), you know shaking hands, elevated pulse, quick breathing etc all those physical, involuntary tells.

This has never been a big problem for me, and then about two weeks ago it started, for me it is shallow breaths and pounding heart everytime I'm bullying big pots with crap and, try as I might, I can't get myself back under control.

I dropped down a level and started faking the same symptoms when I do have a hand, but aside from that- any thoughts why I would start having this reaction now and how to deal with it better?

Anyone else ever had this problem?

  • You've inadvertantly discovered that those little round clay objects represent actual $$$. You need to donk-off a few thousand and reaqiuire the inevitable numbness that is associated with this. Atleast, that's what I do!

Seriously... have you had a lay-off from live games at this level? That could cause it. Otherwise it maybe from a change in another aspect of your life... Subconciously affecting your game or regard for money.

    That's what she said
  • Faking again Kristy? Tsk, Tsk, Tsk...

Actually the times when I have that adrenaline rush is when I see someone betting into me when I have the big hand and am awaiting my turn to act. If I'm bluffing, (actually I never bluff), adrenaline never seems to kick in.. Maybe it's old age, the adrenaline is all gone... lol.. Wonder why the difference, I guess that's why just learning tells can be dangerous, unless you know which ones mean what with which person... Way too many factors for me, just play cards, ignore the other guy.... :)
  • I like to Zen out. Repeat this to yourself slowly, "It's only bluffing if I think it is. Inevitably, I must have the better hand. What may seem like a bluff to others is not. I'm not bluffing at all! I'm betting this hand for value!"

    Mind over matter. ;)
  • Wow this is odd!!!

I just assumed that you didn't have a pulse.

    My bad.
  • I'll come at this from a different angle. Go see your doctor. If this has never been an issue before, what has changed to make it one now? Maybe there is a physical reason for it. In an unrelated scenario, I discovered an underlying problem doing this. But, most likely, all you do is eliminate a possible answer.
  • Hey Kristy, if this is a sudden change in your behaviour I would first look at what has changed in the past few weeks, could be as simple as eating differently, too much caffine. You could start bringing something thats going to give you a natural kick prior and during a session.

If its not a lifestyle thing than I really like the idea of using a calming technique prior and during a session. If you go in this direction then you need to make this a part of your daily routine, poker or no poker. Either a full body relaxation technique or just a positive statement that you can repeat to yourself.

    Good luck

lets hope!! After all if I never hear "your mouth doesn't have a period" again, it'll be too soon!

you should just fold now, I win.
  • Thanks for the suggestions,

I switched to whatever drink Mark was mixing me at the Cook's, dropped down a level and degenerate gambled my little ass off

and then went to the casino (a day later sober) mentally prepared and centred and drinking mostly cranberry juice... it was a good bit better!
