Range to call someone who is tilt-pushing

Was playing an online MTT last night ($10 buyin). Avg stack is 1700 (so still early, level 3 I think) and I have about 2500.

The big stack at the table takes a huge hit (not really a bad beat, but I recall in some book "Don't go broke in an unraised pot"). Basically he let the blinds in cheap, one boated on his AK high flush, money card was on the turn for both players. Anyway, he's crippled now, ranting like crazy in the chat box, starts pushing every hand. 325, 450, 500, 1200 (someone looked him up), ...

He kept doing it until he was out even though he had gotten back to a decent chip stack with the double up. I was actually floored by how many ppl kept limping in even after the 3rd push in a row.

So what range/position do you need to raise/call here? The very first hand of the insanity (325 push UTG) I had K8o on the button and almost took the risk. My guess is it would have been 60/40 with me in the lead PF.

Should you reshove to get isolation if you choose to play? Flat call to try and get a multi-way just to get him knocked out?

  • personally, i would open my range a little bit against this guy and hopefully look to knock him out. i'm also wanting him isolated for sure if i'm going to attempt this - just because he's pushing with anything doesn't mean the next guy who calls doesn't have anything. and yes this idiot seems to be dying to give his chips away, but you still have to be very careful about your stack size. you don't want to be risking too much of your stack in such a way (i.e. a preflop all in call). side note: i'm assuming that you have a decent post flop game and can outplay others post flop.

you have to consider the long run in MTTs. winning a minor pot in the third level and knocking out a donk is decent, but it's not your overall goal. call him if you have the cards to back it up (with a somewhat more open range compared to others), but don't take unnecessary risks this early simple because a donk is constantly pushing.
