Brantford Problems or silly tag line?

A friend of mine is a dealer for Brantford and his tagline reads "it was 89% in favor of a walkout for OLG CAsino Brantford."

I hope it is true...er I mean, I'm deeply concerned for the limit players.

Can't get a hold of him to ask for clarification yet..so this could be a gag-line

  • While reading that forum, I found out even more shocking news - Full-time employees at Niagara's two casinos had until May 16 to decide whether to take a buyout package or become part-time! One worker described it as feeling she "had a gun to her head....
With gas prices discouraging travel by car, a drop in American tourists to Canada and increase in the number of Canadians cashing in on the high loonie by visiting the United States, the casinos face serious challenges this summer.
" Other news articles have reported that wages had been frozen.

The forum claims that the unionized Casino Windsor has 2/3 full-time workers, while the non-unionized Niagara casinos will have 0% full-time. The CAW workers at OLG Casino Brantford who bothered to vote were 89% in favour of a strike. Woodbine voted 90% in favour. Sudbury voted 93% in favour. All three OLG casino sites are set to go on strike on June 1.

Wat?! I only have one week to gambool all my money away at Limit and Slots, before I am forced to keep my money? ;)

Full-time employees at Niagara's two casinos had until May 16th to voluntarily resign (with a buyout package) OR voluntarily drop down to part-time status OR remain exactly as they are (ie: employed full-time)!!!! Non-unionized full-time employees at Niagara's two casino WILL NOT be 0%....YET!

    btw, i fixed your post.

what the hell does this mean? okay, so the boss walks out to speak to all the employees: "okay everyone, here are your choices. you can either voluntarily resign, voluntarily demote yourself to part time, or remain the same." why would anyone choose to change then if they don't have to?

i'm assuming that all this means is that the casino will slowly weed out all the full time employees while not letting any new employees work full time. still, why give the employees this choice since it seems slightly stupid for any of them to just outright quit or take a pay cut when they don't have to.
  • Was thinking the same thing Dolens.

Kind of like when my boss said I could either start working from the Hamilton office or volutarily resign. He then learned a new phrase "Constructive Dismissal"
  • Some people actually don't want to, or are able to, work full time. I think the casino realizes that although MOST won't change their full time status, there may be some who would rather resign completely (and either enjoy unemployment or simply go elsewhere for work), and offer those that would rather have part time employment instead due to whatever home life issue it may be (babysitting expenses can sometimes make working full time -ev).

I believe the casino is just trying to offer all its staff options. Whether or not they take any option is up the the individual.
  • yes alot of employers find that term the hard way hobbes, i know where you are coming from. we need to start our own business hobbes, working for others is going nowhere.

btw i thought you sat at home all day and play poker:)

I have my own Data Architect biz. :)

If I sat at home all day to play poker, I'd qualify for welfare ;)

I've yet to meet a Data Architect who actually does anything useful. Are you any different?
  • My lack of understanding is that he is also a Data Archaeologist.

    Shhhhh....don't tell every one. :)
  • From playing in Brantford in the past few weeks, it has been mentioned by the dealers that they are going on strike June 1st due to contract disputes. It has also been mentioned by some players that Brantford is planning on renovating and/or expanding the poker room. More than likely these renovations will happen during the strike.

In some off-topic news, two weeks ago on Thursday at Brantford, apparently some lady got arrested for stealing chips in a 5/10 game. Stupid girl.
  • OK OK... here is the deal... for my friend Kristi....

Yes it is true.. Brantford voted to strike on June 1, 2008. Go to my fourm http://www.brantfordcasinoworkers.info and it will give you all the details you need.

NO this is not a GAG line... and there is also an article for Brantford Expositotor

    Peace out and happy gambling

I highly doubt any trades would cross a picket line so who would do the renos?

Yeah, you're right. Was just going by what I've heard while playing.

I've also heard from the dealers that the strike will only last a week anyways so renos are highly unlikely.
  • OLG Casino Brantford and OLG Slots at Sudbury Downs are closed due to a labour dispute with unionized employees. See the OLG news release.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Greektown casino has filed for bankruptcy.
  • Meanwhile, the Detroit Greektown casino has filed for bankruptcy.

Seems like that's just a plot to prevent a forced sale..
  • Brantford casino has great games & a very nice poker room and also very good dealers but the casino manager & shift boss do not treat the dealers or the players with respect! They give you ice in the winter, you're lucky when you get a comp
  • Has anyone heard any updates on this? I haven't been in ages, and I have a hankering for some 7 way capped preflop/flop/turn/river action.
  • From what I have read, the gap between OLG's demands and the CAW's demands are far apart, and they are not even talking. My GUESS is that it will be a very long strike, and both union workers and management who have mortgages and other bills to pay will have to start looking for jobs.

Gotta wait for the vote and give them time to get re-stocked.. but at least there's hope :)
  • If the deal is ratified today BCC will be open by the weekend.

    :wav:
  • **NOTICE**

Brantford Casino Workers have ratified the deal, it was 60% in favor.

They state they are hoping to re-open by Sat August 2, 2008, granted it will take time to reload, restock, get staff in and have anyone take care of loose ends and business at home.

Now hopefully they will do renovations as they been saying for the past yr, something like 20-30 million if i am correct.

Whoo hoo back to work they go:ac:ah:ad:as
  • I wonder what the demographics of the Brantford poker room degens will be like.
I'm seeing many of the Brantford regulars in Fallsview ...

Will there be much less business?
  • I also noticed many Brantford refugees at Fallsview, but ever since the CNE Casino opened, many of these players have been playing daily at the CNE. Gamblers are creatures of habit so they may stay for the duration of the CNE. Brantford badly needs to have its first week-long series of poker tournaments in a year in order to bring players back. ^-^
