Need some quick Vegas help hurry.

Hey All,

So a quick brag. I found out today that I have been accepted for a position with Corrections Canada doing programs delivery at Pacific Institution. I've been competing for this for a while, and if any of you have gone through a government competitions process you know it can be pretty stressful. At any rate, there are about five days between my completing work at my current job, and my beginning work at the new job, and my girlfriend blew my mind by suggesting a Vegas getaway to celebrate the new job, and also to make up for the fact that I had to cancel a trip home to Ontario as a result of the new job.

At any rate, Allegiant Airlines happens to be running a special on Sunday May 25th featuring 21 dollar one way flights per person(blackjack flights they are called). The return flight will be 88 bucks per person. Total round trip 250 dollars. That part is awesome, but we're worried that we will lose all those savings when we book a hotel room not part of a package. So what I'm hoping to hear is what the best values on the strip are and what options there are as far as poker room rates. My lady is looking for a vacation, and an opportunity to lay comfortably by a pool. So we would like to have a hotel on par with the Mirage, or similar. Just looking to pluck the knowledge of some forum members.

We can do the Mirage as part of a package with a flight for around 1100 bucks cdn, including 4 nights accomodation.

The cheap flights can fill up quickly, so I'm hoping to get something booked.

Thank you.

Thanks, and please

  • How cheap a hotel do you want? If you're going to just play poker and can be off the strip the check out Palace Station, etc + rental car.

Otherwise check out Harrahs, Ballys, Imperial Palace, Flamingo for cheap centrally-located rooms. Nothing special, but good location.
  • Booking directly with the hotel is often better than buying a package. I would have booked directly with the Harrah's chain myself but Expedia.ca had a unique 7th-night free offer for Imperial Palace which saved me a significant percentage of the hotel cost. Here are a few other links to help you find the best hotel deal: kayak.com, mobissimo.com & https://www.harrahs.com/MarketCalendar.do.

  • I think what we've decided to do is book into some place cheap for the Sunday night, we don't get in til 10 anyhow, and then make the move to the Mirage on Monday when the price drops from 239 per night to 99 per night.

    Thanks all.

Blondefish, you're the guy who knows a thing or two about tourney's. You happen to know of any good value tourney's happening the days I am there. May 26th 27th, or 28th?

    Thanks
  • Unfortunately for you, the best-ever series of tournaments won't be until May 29 - July 20. If I was going to Las Vegas before the Caesars Palace Mega Stack Series starts, then the best-value is the daily Venetian noon tournaments. See my post of the few Skill Level 6 tournaments in Las Vegas.

  • Thanks for the links guys.

We ended up booking into the ratty old plaza for Sunday night at a rate of 65 bucks, and then are moving to the Mirage on Monday for the rest of the trip. My girlfriend really wanted to stay there, so it all works out in the end. We'll tell ourselves that it's fun to have the downtown Vegas experience for a night.

Interestingly with the Mirage, I called them to see about any specials, and their "best prices" according to the guy I spoke to were around 20 to 30 a night above what their own website was offering.

At any rate, total cost hotel and flights came to less than 400 per person, a savings of 400 bucks over what we found for package offers.

So with that all said and done, are any forumers planning to be in Vegas that week, or is everyone arriving the week after for the series?
  • We ended up booking into the ratty old plaza for Sunday night at a rate of 65 bucks,

Actually, the plaza and las vegas club's room are pretty roomy for the low rate that you pay (I stayed at both from my recent trip).

Here's an easy Plaza scam: Get into your room, and find something to complain about it. They'll ask you if you just want to move rooms. Do it. They'll land up giving you a second $25 blackjack match coupon :-)

I figured that out honestly when I got to my room in the plaza, jumped into bed and then instantly jumped out of it due to a mystery wet spot on the corner .. lol

Edit #2: Late night downtown tip: The only grill place that is open is at the Golden Nugget.

Beat: 0 for 3 on the $25 match bets including a 5 card dealer drawn 21 against my hard 20 on a double deck game.

Edit: My colleague got a Venetian 'Ice Suite' for $150 a nite via priceline.

Also, if you want to rent a car, Dollar.com should cover you at 10.99 a nite, no need for insurance if you have one of those credit cards that covers LDW.
  • if your girlfriend wants to hit the nice hotel pools...just go to the one shed like to go to and ask someone leaving for their room key. thatll allow her to visit all of the nicest pools without being hassled by security. Mirage has areally nice pool so she might be content there...but save your room key...you can use it again on future visits.

also, dont ever wait in line for the buffets. most of the bigger casinos offer buffet passes to poker players. just go to the poker room cage and ask if they have them. The Wynn and Bellagio have them...and I think Venetian as well.

if your going to be in the poker room for long stretches...bring a hoodie or a jacket...almost all of the casinos overcompensate for the outdoor heat by pumping freezing air into the casino.

if you want to watch some shows...go down to one of the two same day discounted ticket booths. you can save up to 50% i think on certain shows. one of the booths is in the CocaCola / M&M building across from New York New York I believe...and forget where the other one is.

The other one is accross the street from the Wynn (Fashion Show Mall or something).

For those that are familiar (or have used) these booths in the past, how likely am I do be able to get tickets to a show like Mama Mia/Any of the Cirque shows on the day of? Should I go there first thing in the morning?
  • Youll definitely be able to get tickets to Mystere (the family oriented, circus one). Last year when I was there in June there were tickets for KA (martial arts) and Zumanity (erotic) availible but were sold out by the afternoon when we arrived.

    Im uncertain about Mamma Mia.

Thanks. Those were just quick examples of shows I'll be interested in checking out while I'm there. Any other that you recommend?
  • If yer into old Vegas, I went to see The Rat Pack at the Plaza. Good Kitchy fun and you can get tix from the 1/2 price places.
