First tournament win ?

Just curious how long it took before anybody won their first tournament. I don't play a lot of tournaments myself, but I have enjoyed the ones I have played. I played in a few pokerstars tournaments with 10,000 entrants (freerolls) and finished in the top 200 twice also played a few $2.25 to $5.50 tournaments with a couple of (small) cashes. Any advice on tournament play would be appreciated. I have read of couple of books on tourny play, that have help my game.
Thanks for any info :)

  • Taking down a big tourney online is not easy. My first probably took 3 years... I won a $20 tourney on UB with about 800 players. 3 years is probably not too bad, but then again, I don't play too many MTT's.
  • not even 3 months or around there anyway, it was just a 2 dollar tourny for about 200 bucks i won for 1st, then won the same tourny 2 more times after that the next few months, and won a 897 person tourny on full tilt.

i suggest you dont play mtt on pokerstars if you want to finish like 1st, i would play on smaller sites for the best chance, like wpt site which does not have many entrants in mtt's, i would have suggested prima (microgaming) sites as thats where i won the above tournies but they changed their format which sucks ass now so unless u like turbo i would stay away.
  • I'd count on having a 200 buy in bankroll if you're playing big MTT's.
  • Prob 2 years for me
  • I won the first tournament I ever played in. It was hosted by a friend of mine (smallish stakes), $25 buy-in, 12 players, 1st paid something like $150. After that I got hooked started playing online at PS (play money) and, I don't know if anyone remembers the WSOP Team Canada promotion PS ran last year but, I entered one with like 3500 players, took 1st for $25 (money didn't last long). Decided to deposit my own money ($25), but this time be smarter with it. So far, so good.
  • Never won any "big" tournys.... won a couple of 4.40 180 but that's a small field...
Made a couple final tables in big tournaments but never been able to seal the deal (4th,5th and 6th place finish most of the time)
  • first MTT win was a $5.50 on pokerroom. 598 entrants. 1st place was $598. probably took me maybe 6 months or so before winning that one. my problem is that i don't play often enough i think. lately i've been on a tear though. 10 final tables in the last month and a half. 4 of them wins. entrants between 150 to 1000 (probably an average of 350-ish). buy-ins on average probably around $5-$15. i've already made more money in this past month than i did working part time last summer, so i'm considering taking this summer off from work and concentrating on poker specifically.

I don't recall my first tourney win but it sure wasn't right away (i.e. in my first year or two of playing).

You are going to find that winning a tournament is a personal accomplishment but is not the end all. For example, I was in a $100+9 tournament at UB this weekend and finished 3rd for a cash of $2300. Obviously, I was going for first which was $6000 but I endured a lot just to get to 3rd.

Since Jan 1 of this year, I think I have one win and maybe two (out of say 150 tourneys with buyin range of $20-$120). However, the field size of the tourneys on UB is generally smaller ranging from 80-220 for the most part. Out of those 150 tourneys, I have cashed about 30 of them and made the final table about 20 times. I don't have exact numbers but I think my profit level is approaching $10K since Jan 1.

Sorry to sound like a braggart but I consider myself a fairly successful tourney player and was trying to give OP a snapshot of some results after several years of experience (online for five years).
