  • If everything is still the same as it was 2-3 summers ago when I was there as a supervisor, your chances of dealing poker is pretty slim, which isn't a bad thing in the end. There are generally many returning poker dealers, as well as a large number of new dealers that wants to deal poker. So if you want to get consistent shifts, you are better off with Blackjack/Roulette/Spanish as you are able to get 5 day shifts throughout the month of August easily dealing those games. You pay I believe $80 or something like that for their dealing course, and you will have to pass a test in order to be certified. Honestly speaking, most/all dealers who take their coures will end up passing...so you really don't have to worry about that.

Pay was $9.xx (closer to $10) back a couple of years ago, but I would imagine that should've gone up a bit by now. Hours of operation is 12pm (noon) to 6 am. There are two main shifts..one is from 11am to 9pm, and the other is 9pm to 7am (there will be alternate start time and swing shifts just to ease transition obv). Tips are pooled, but most of them a generated from the poker pit. They will distribute tips at the end...and you will receive your portion based on the hours you worked. You will average about an extra dollar or two per hour worked. You will see alot of regulars in non-poker pits. I remember I was in a BJ and Spanish pit, and there are at least a dozen or so whom came almost everyday. As far as poker pits go, I tried to keep away from it as much as possible. I know its all fun and stuff to deal with poker there, but players behaviour isn't the best there, and as supervisor/pitboss, there is only so much we (or they) can do. You will probably get sworn at, get cards thrown at you, you will have players who hollywood all day, players telling you how to do your job, what have you.

Mind you, what I wrote in the second paragraph was my experience there 2-3 summers ago, so things could have possibly changed dramatically since.

Like I mentioned, there are other swing shifts that you can do, you can work on weekends, whatever. You fill out an availability time sheet when you start your training and they schedule you around your availability.
  • i'll add my 2 cents here as an experienced dealer. i know that the GBH has hired a few dealers from the CNE and they are considered experienced when they come and join us.. most are decent dealers and just need more table time. Durham college offers this course and just teaches blackjack as we train you in the rest of the games could be an inexpensive way to start at the ground level if you are interested in becoming a dealer full time
