Macau - Anybody played here?

I will be travelling to Hong Kong in December/January for about a month. Has anyone been to Macau, which is the Vegas of the east? Just wondered what the poker rooms are like and which casinos are preferred. I will also be travelling to the Philippines but there doesn't appear to be much poker there. I only found one casino that seems to have two poker tables and stud seems to be more popular. Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • I used to live in HK and went "across the water" to Macau a few times...mind you back then I wasn't legal to gamble there yet. However, I went back recently, and the Venetian Macau is definitely one of the casinos you should consider hitting up. The APPT was held at the Grand Waldo Hotel and Casino, so you might want to check that out either. Poker is still gaining popularity in the East, so while there might be games running, I don't recall there were too many tables - consider it like the US/Canada in the pre-Moneymaker era.
  • careful, jimmy. you may running into one or two crazy asians in that game. just remember +ev plays are our friend.

i hope you have a great time and look forward to the trip report(s).

yah, I think I will avoid the home game scene; definitely a trip report, although its a long way off. Thanks for the feedback Westside on the Venetian. Sounds like a fun place. I would expect a tighter game than here in North America.

as i recall reading in my (recently vastly increased) magazine collection, i think johnny chan has had a role in some of the development over there. maybe you can get graham to pull a few strings and have his bud give you a call to discuss? or you could just ask in chat at one of the upcoming forum tourneys...

    LMAO
  • What did you find out about poker in the Philippines? I like setting poker goals, so one of my new goals for 2008 is to win a seat to:

APPT Manila (Asia Pacific Poker Tour)
    November 13-16, 2008
    Hyatt Hotel and Casino, Philippines
    Buy-in: 100,000 pesos

To those with a PokerStars account, have the satellites to this APPT November event already started? If anybody finds a better satellite for the APPT, please post.

  • Thanks. Does Graham or anybody else know the best way to sign up with PokerStars? Signing up with the WSOP sponsor Everest.com through 2+2 was highly +EV, so I hope it will be just as good with PokerStars.

  • I have an affiliate deal with Poker Stars but I think Graham does too through the forum so I'm not going to publicly advertise my own affiliate deal on his forum.
  • doesn't look like the Manila dates have been finalized yet so I don't you will find any satellites for this specific tournament until closer to the tournament dates.

The APPT dates and latest brochures were handed out after the PokerStars WSOP party at the Palms Casino. APPT Manila is on November 13-16. I chatted for awhile with Greg Raymer and he can't make it to the Fallsview $10K event because of all the APPT and other PokerStars-sponsored events that he is going to.

PokerStars Steps Sit & Go satellites are much worse than Fallsview's suspended satellites, since PokerStars takes too much rake at every one of the six Steps. Does anybody know if PokerStars' qualifiers starting at $2.50 are any better? Doyle's Room and Eurolinx are also running APPT satellites, but I don't want to download and sign up for any site without knowing if their APPT satellites are worth playing.

You do realize that playing satellites (whether live or online) is always going to involve more rake than just winning the money through cash or tournaments and then buying your way in don't you? The only advantage that playing satellites gives by my way of thinking is that there are quite a few casual players giving it a try, therefore hopefully it's +ev for the experienced player.
  • Qualify by playing those rebuy satellites into the $300-$500 range MTT satellites which award seats if you are that anal about paying minimal rake.
