these people just won't fold

low limit hold'em

If I'm on the button with AQo - or say in the SB, is it better to just CALL 1 bet instead of raising? Lets say the table is loose passive. They'll play anything with a number or letter on it, and call all raises.

Cause I'm thinking its better to keep the pot odds 'bad' < > to cause others to make "mistakes" (aka Fundamental theorem of poker) when I raise if they are drawing for gutshots, OESdraws, FLushes, Trips. My raises are NOT kicking people out (cause they are all passive Callers).

Lets say I am in Middle position with QQ. All calls to me. I raise - no problem. What about KK in the cutoff or button and its gone 2 bets all around the board, with 8-9 callers. Raise?

Same as above but with KQ in the hole. Just call?
*side note: Aren't broadways only best with fewer players? if so, are their hopes of chasing OESdraws futile and worthless? Is it best for them to stick with trips, 2 pair, top pair?*

  • These people are generally oblivious to the pot odds and will call whether you raise or not. By raising with the best hand, you are augmenting their mistakes, which is what you want to do. The worse the mistake, the better value you get in the long run. They don't know/care if they have odds to draw to their hand. They are going to hope to draw to it more often than not. Punishing them for doing so is how you win money in low limit holdem.

    As for your examples:

AQo, I just call in the blind, but only because it leaves me in early position.

KK in the cutoff I reraise for sure. Make it 3 bets to the button (you might buy the button for the rest of the hand)... also KK is so strong that you want to punish everyone else who has a hand worse than yours - and if you have cowboys, chances are you have the best hand at the moment.

KQo in the same spot, I might fold to a raise, depends who is raising.. if it's someone solid I'd drop it. Someone shaky, or with lots of callers, i might see the flop and if it doesn't nail me get out... KQs I would call no question.

    hork.
  • You don't normally raise in limit poker in late position with the expectation that people who have already called 1 bet will fold. This applies to both low-limit and a solid game of limit poker. (It is worth considering whether or not players who are *yet to act* might fold...)

When considering raising pre-flop, I wouldn't get too attached to a "keep the pot smaller to increase FTOP" mistaked theory. In L-P low-limit, a far better theory is "make people pay 2 bets instead of 1 bet pre-flop for calls that are too loose".

I'm generally raising in any position, when it's any number of bets to me with QQ or better or AKs in low-limit. I play AKo close to the same way.

AQo and KQo are tricky, especially in late position. I would usually raise with either of these hands s00ted. (Why? They're S000OOO000TED!) These hands unsuited are probably the borderline for me between raising and calling in late position when it's one bet to me.
