good clay chips
Hey Guys,
I'm just wondering if you guys can point me to a site that sells good poker chips. I'd like get a set of 500-650 13 grms clay chips. Something good. I just ordered a sample set from a guy on e-bay, the ad said that they were clay but clearly they are made of plastic with a metal insert. I guess the price of $120 for 1000 chips was to good to be true lol.

Ok real clay chips are 9-10 grams. 13 gram chips are plastic with slugs.
Expect to pay anywhere from .50 to 1.50 and up per chip, depending on what you want. Do you want tourney or cash game chips? New or or casino used? Custom made is also an option.
Getting sample sets is a smart place to start however.

I have Nexgen chips which are a composite chip with a metal insert but they have a nice clay feel and sound. See here for an example: Poker Chips - NexGen Poker Chips
Unfortunately, advertising for poker chips is very misleading. For some reason companies can say "real clay" poker chips when in fact they are molded plastic or some sort of composite. Here is the most common "real clay" chip which while being fairly heavy due to the metal insert, it certainly has a plasticy feel. These are very common but thankfully not too expensive. Here is a casino used cash set which will go for $250-$350 or so. Good price for used clay chips but you will need to clean them.

Note to everyone else: these are the real casino chips, of which Buzzardd has commemorative replica plastic chips. Now you know why there is a market for replicas @ $.25 per.
Of course you can also buy new home use clay chips which will run you $1.10-$1.50 or so per chip. Sidepot is one good manufacturer. The Protege line and Paulson Noir line are excellent home chips.

If $200 is your ballpark, then I highly recommend Nexgen chips which do have the metal insert and are 12g. But their special composite material makes them feel like real clay chips. Here is an example of a 1000 chip set for $200: 1000 NEXGEN™ Series 8000 Poker Chips
The only possible drawback is they don't come with denominations on the chip. I have 1500 of them without denominations and have no problems as most players are familiar with white=1, red=5, green=25, etc. However, they are designed with a 1" inset which takes the common sticker which you can print out yourself on an inkjet printer if you so desire. You can also get them custom hotstamped.
Anyways, for your price range, my only recommendation is Nexgen. Maybe get a sample pack to see how they look and feel.

The chip room has Nexgens, the Dunes and Nevada Jacks for sale. His Nexgens are slightly cheaper than the link given above plus he won't screw you on shipping. Samples probably would be cheapest from them but if you decide to get the Nevada Jacks - go direct to the supplier via the link I gave in a previous post.
Personally I find the Dunes replicas visually very stunning and feel great in the hand but stacking wise they are a bit slippery.

However, given the choice and your budget, you can't go wrong with 500 Nevada Jacks ceramic chips for $180. Remember they are on sale for 40% off right now so they represent by far the most chip for the buck right now. That is what I would recommend. Get a sample set before you buy to be sure. They won't stack quite as well but unlikely you would be stacking them higher than 20-25 high anyways. For most purposes, they stack just fine and have a textured surface so they are not slippery. These are my Desert Sands ceramics in stacks of 25 which are made by Nevada Jacks.

The Jacks and the Desert Sands are exactly the same chip just with a different design. I prefer the classic old school look of the DS but most seem to prefer the Jacks. I also liked the colours better. I believe the NJ .25 chip is pink and the $1k chip is white?!? The DS are more traditional colours.
I believe in the US that price includes shipping and for Canada you pay (guess) about $40 and they drop ship it within Canada to avoid duty. I got most of my chips before they made that arrangement so I'm not exactly sure. They will ship almost immediately. I received most of my stuff within one week. You can call NJ and ask for Kim. Obv you can get samples from NJ too but I am guessing the chiproom will be cheaper in that respect.

It's probably too many $1 chips but you could probably sell some off on ebay @ .10 to .20 per to make it an even better deal.

So for a 10 man table, you could go with this 500 chip set:
25 - 125 (120+5 extra)
100 - 150 (120+30 extra)
500 - 125 (90+ 35 extra)
1000 - 75 (40+35 extra)
5000 - 25 (extra)
The extra chips are used for chipping up. There will will 3000 worth of 25 chips to be chipped up which can easily be handled by the extra 100s and 500s. There are 12,000 worth of 100s that are covered by the extra 500s.
You can introduce the 5000 chip by giving out starting stacks of 15,000 or 20,000. You can also introduce the 5000 if you want to get rid of some 500s or 1000s later on in the tourney.
Anyways, that's the way I calculated my chipset distribution. There's nothing worse than having too few of a particular chip which is usually the result of having too many of another.
The guy you know with the NJ 5k, 10k, and 25k chips, are they the "Skulls"?

NJ Skulls are a different set. Same as the Desert Sands but different graphics.
I have a set of them that I got for free.
The feel, sound, stackablility is excellent with these chips.
But....
I hate them, They all have the same edge spot colours. This makes it harder to tell the $1 dark blue from the $100 black chips.
There are $25,000 plaques available for this set for about $8 in groups of ten.
One option might be to buy that cheap 1000 piece set for your small denominations and then buy desert sands for your other denominations... as long as you are not using the $100 and $1 skulls at the same time...
If I were buying Nevada Jacks I'd go with the Desert Sands like Moose did.
Also there is less security with Nevada Jack Skulls.
Everybody and his uncle has picked up a free set from some sort of promotion.
By the way. You may want to consider getting custom chips if you are worried about security.
If not for the whole set, At least for your highest denomination chips .... say $5000 and above.
No they are the $5k, $10k and $25k Desert Sands chips in the picture. The skulls are more popular so they have a few more std options available than Desert Sands. As Reef says the Skulls have plaques and other goodies you can add on directly from Nevada Jacks.
A bunch of us Desert Sands enthusiasts got together and ordered 5000 custom chips in the high denoms and also a 10 cent chip. There are still several hundred left.

I've been e-mailing back and forth with Kim from NJ. She was telling me that I can get the DS chips for the same price. I already ordered the "skulls" as a sample set. Are they pretty close to being the same chip? You like your DS or Skulls better? If I want the higher denom DS, I can get them from you or your buddy right? Been a great response here for selling chips here. I really use a couple hundred of the nickel chips in my game and love them. It's a good place to buy/sell/trade chips. I have really not had any problems (and I've shipped chips all the way to Switzerland).

If you made him an offer sans the pink chips you would have a nice little 10 person tourney set. But with the pink chips and no denoms, you would have the flexibility to use this as a cash game set as well, using the pink chips for .10c or .25c.
For 10 person tournies you need:
T25 - 120
T100 - 100
T500 - 30
That gives you enough for a T2500 tourney using a 12/7/3 split, with enough to colour out the T25s.
If you add some T1000s you can have bigger starting stacks and colour up the T100s.
Another breakdown you can use is a 8/13/2 split for T2500. In which case you need
T25 - 80
T100 - 150
T500 - 20
Again the extra T100 are for colour ups and you can add some T1000s for flexibility - rebuys, bigger starting stacks etc.
