Bell throttles its Internet competitors

TheStar.com | sciencetech | Bell throttles its Internet competitors

This is the most read article from the toronto star yesterday...anyone heard about this??

I personally left bell due to them throttling their internet connection (when d/ling torrents between 4 and 2am, i can only hit 30kbs..typically with no throttle, i should be getting 300-400kbs. this represents .05% of what i'm paying for) and due to large numbers of customers leaving, they've started throttling the ISP's who purchase bandwidth from them.

Here is another website that may be of interest for people who want to know who's fighting this....

  • Bell is the absolute worst company in the history of man. I hope they get hit with a 500 Million dollar class action.
  • My Paradise Hotel 2 torrents download just fine at like 200kb/s using Teksavvy...
  • the full throttling for wholesale isp's gets rolled out on april 7th.....
  • Rogers did this briefly a longgg (3 years?) time ago, but then they stopped for some reason.
  • Rogers is still throttling their customers, including bandwidth caps (not sure how high they are..) but not curtaling the internet nearly as much as bell is. I dont know if they throttle their third party wholesalers..i can't imagine they would until bell either wins or loses this battle. And with most people being misinformed, it looks like they are winning....

hmmm i'm not having any problems with rogers and havent for years -- i assume my d/ls arent as fast as they could be? but i'm still getting 300kb/s
  • Last I heard Rogers will thottle certain times of the day (ie peak hrs) so as to prevent system overloads.

They have implemented a cap (mine is 60Gb/month) and it's like only $2/GB after that. There are other plans that give you faster speeds and more usage cap room.
  • Rogers Shows American Cable Users The Future - With different tiers come different caps, and different per-GB fees - dslreports.com
looks like different tiers get different caps, and different overage charges..and the overage charges get rebated until june?
All in all, it appears to be changing the way we use the internets! (or just getting us to pay out the nose for it)
  • •Ultra Lite – 2 GB monthly cap, $5.00 per additional GB
    •Lite – 1Mbps, 25GB monthly cap, $2.50 per additional GB
    •Express – 7Mbps, 60 GB cap, $2.00 per additional GB
    •Extreme - 10Mbps, 95 GB cap, $1.50 per additional GB
    •Extreme Plus – 18Mbps, 95 GB cap, $1.25 per additional GB

I would have edited my last response, but pokerforum is having a hard time posting anything right now....weird...
  • hmmm that's odd I've never been charged more than my flat monthly fee and have never heard of these charges -- maybe I don't download that much??

You should be notified by the end of the week.
They show your usage for the past few months (me ~20GB/month). They are also rebating the next 3 months overages.
  • The most my roommates and I have hit is 183 GB in one month earlier this year. Thankfully they're moving out before June when Rogers' extra charges kick in.

I'll say it before someone else does... THATSALOTTAPORN!!!!!!!

They only charge a max $25 for overages though.

Ahh, good to know. I hadn't bothered to read all the fine print yet.

  • Cogeco caps off at 60gb/month...I know this because they put a bloody 24 hour suspension on my account yesterday.

I would have gladly paid some type of surchage for going over, but cutting my internet? Are they 10 years old and still believe in time outs?

At this time of the school year you can imagine the head aches this caused, not too mention causing withdrawl for my degenerate ass!

If they were not the only option out here, I would have had it canceled yesterday in a heart beat.

    I said 183GB, not 183TB.

  • Offtopic: I saw a 2TB drive as costco.. $499...

Actually it was funnier than that.. The first side of the four sided display had 500 GB external drives.. I was like wow cool. Then I turned the corner and saw the 1TB.. and I was like wow cool.. then I turned the other corner and saw 2TB.. and I was like wow cool.. when I turned the last corner and saw cheapass webcams, I was disappointed.
  • Shoulda started at side 4! :)
