Remember to start dealing with the small blind....

errrr.. and in all seriousness, one thing I notice in a good dealer is he/she keeps the action moving in a smooth manner without getting involved in deep disussions at the table. A little friendly banter is fine, but don't overdo it.
I assume you already know the mechanics of dealing.

Yes I understand the mechanics - only been playing for around 5 years, nothing organized

I am now trying to choose a method for shuffling - from what I've learned so far is to shoot for 35 hands in a hour

Yes - keeping the flow would be important in achiving the 35 hands/hour

I notice the "wax on wax off" method on T.V - looks time consuming

the "riffle-strip-riffle-cut" looks quick - might take some practice

Really... even at places that take a rake or at Casinos? I never knew that, but frankly I don't play too much live poker other than with friends.
  • No, not at casinos, they get a base rate there+. That is why casino dealers tend to be the most horrid, especially in Ontario. Any decent dealer will be making wayyy more underground than at a casino
  • well. most charity dealers get flat rate $65.-$100. Plus tips.If you are a good dealer request a flat rate. Also if you are a good dealer----Please come do a table test for me!!!
  • what about an hourly rate
As one example, the base rate at the WSOP is a whopping $6.41/hour, :'( but rates and tip policies vary widely. Some places pays its dealers only by tips, but actually takes part of their tips away and forces them to later play so they can actually lose money by working!

You don't usually get to choose your own shuffling method. The standard casino procedure is riffle-riffle-strip-riflle-cut. I don't like self-dealt games where most of the players don't know how to shuffle without exposing cards, or do the horrible habit of pre-burning, or throw out the board in some random fashion where part of the cards are hidden or you don't know which is the turn and river, or a player refuses the mandatory cut of the deck that the mechanic just set up. ;)
