any tips for using pokerstove? looks confusing to me , you dont have time while playing a game to input whatever you need to input.
Pokerstove isn't meant to be used "on-the-fly" while you play. It's used to conduct equity calculations in certain situations/hands.
After a session of poker, when you review your hands, if you're unsure of a decision you made in an equity standpoint vs. the other player's hand/range, poker stove will calculate your pot equity.
Very useful tool if used properly. Check out the FAQ on pokerstove.com for detailed explaination.
Put in your hole cards, put in your villians range (or an entire tables range) and click the Evaluate button, if it comes up with -1 equity change it from Enumerate All to Monte Carlo.
Ways to input data:
AKo = Ace King Offsuit
AsKh = Ace Spades, King Hearts
22 = pair of twos
22+ = pair of twos or better
AJo+,22+ = Ace Jack offsuit or better, pair of twos or better
The RD button assumes the person has any two random cards.
If there are board cards fill them in as well. If any cards have flipped over or were exposed enter them in the dead cards area.
The application then does simulated hands to determine a winning percentage. It calculates MILLIONS of hands in a matter of a second.
For example:
You want to know what your equity in a hand is if you have a pair of 9's and a 9 has been exposed against 3 random hands.
Next to Player one put 99
Click RD for players 2-4
Enter 9s (or any suit) into the dead cards area
Change to Monte Carlo (the reason is the application provided me with this info after I ran it with Enumerate All the first time : INTERRUPTED! Enumerate All equities unreliable, use Monte Carlo)
Click Evaluate.
I simulated 6.3 million hands and was provided with the following info:
6,313,062 games 14.360 secs 439,628 games/sec
Board:
Dead: 9c
equity win tie pots won pots tied
Hand 0: 36.012% 35.73% 00.28% 2255880 17625.00 { 99 }
Hand 1: 21.315% 20.58% 00.74% 1298993 46658.33 { random }
Hand 2: 21.321% 20.58% 00.74% 1299254 46753.83 { random }
Hand 3: 21.352% 20.61% 00.74% 1301266 46736.83 { random }
So essentially pre-flop you are 36% favourite to win the hand.
Now if the board comes with 2 overcards (K and J) and a 4 how does this change your equity?
6,310,872 games 14.359 secs 439,506 games/sec
Board: Ks Jh 4c
Dead: 9c
equity win tie pots won pots tied
Hand 0: 27.517% 27.40% 00.12% 1729355 7270.50 { 99 }
Hand 1: 24.155% 23.46% 00.70% 1480568 43888.33 { random }
Hand 2: 24.152% 23.46% 00.69% 1480451 43817.33 { random }
Hand 3: 24.176% 23.48% 00.69% 1481985 43755.83 { random }
---
Now you drop to a 27% favourite over 3 random hands.
This isn't meant to be a conclusive guide, but get you started. Once you get going with Poker Stove you'll use it for all sorts of calculation (I was calculating small suited cards vs AT last night for SnG situations(turns out you are pretty much always just a 2 to 1 dog_ 6,310,872 games 14.359 secs 439,506 games/sec

Your equity in this case drops to 27%
This isn't meant to be a comprehensive guide but rather it's meant to just get you started in calculating your equity in situations. I use it all the time. Last night I was calculating how much a dog 2 small suited cards are vs AT pre-flop.
