Some lingo. New to me.

I've come across some lingo on these boards I am unfamiliar with. This my thread for asking about them. I've read several books but have never come across these terms.

M = ? <--(linked to an example)

and red, yellow and other colored zones. I know it's in relation to stack size but can someone expound?

If I see some more I'll post in this same thread.

Perhaps there should be a stickied thread with lingo in it?

  • I STRONGLY recommend you pick up Harrington's trilogy series and go through them. All your questions can be answered there.

    M = your stack size in relation to the blinds & antes. If your stack size is 10,000 chips and the blinds are 500/1000. You have an M of 10.

    Red Zone is any M <= 10
    Yellow Zone is any M between 10 and 20
    Green Zone is M over 20

    but this is dependant on the individual player. Some may consider an M of 12 to 15 Red Zone.

    If you're in Red Zone, you pretty much have to gamble with almost any two cards JUST to stay alive in a tournament. You only have two moves at this stage...PUSH or FOLD.

    Yellow Zone, you have abit of play left in your stack, but you want to be able to pick your moments to play based on cards, players in the hand, and position.

    Green Zone just means you can bully the table abit, or hold back and tighten right up if you choose to and let the smaller stacks kill each other off. Be careful to not get TOO tight though, because as the players get eliminated, the stacks sizes change, and you can find yourself short in no time.

    Also remember that in tournaments, blinds keep going up. If you don't play any hands at 500/1000 and you have 20,000 in chips, your M is 20 (Green). But when the blinds go up to 1000/2000, suddenly your chips are only half value, and you M is 10, which means RED Zone.

    You need to include the Small Blind (and any antes per orbit) so your M in the above example is
    (10000/(1000+500)) = 6

    If you are at a full table same stack/blinds but 100 ante

    (10000(1000+500+(100*10))
    = 4

    Thanks Ron, keep forgetting the ante. Damn Devil's Bet!!!
