New poker player with some questions about casino poker
Hey,
I'm a relatively new poker player who is looking to make the transition from home based games to casino games, just had a couple of questions regarding protocol/etiquette that I was hoping someone could help me with.
1) Buying in - is it like blackjack where you can just sit down, give the dealer 80?
2) Leaving the table - I know in tournaments you can't get up with your chip stack, however what's the etiquette in say a 1/2 no limit table?
Any help would be appreciated.

Depends on the casino. Niagara you can have cash on the table. Brantford you'll need to hit the cage and buy chips unless you are Reloading/topping up.
Chips ALWAYS stay on the table unless you're cashing out. Hit the cage to get your money.
If you're going potty or out for a butt, let the dealer know you'll be right back.
You'll repost any missed blinds upon your return.
If you need a dinner break, ask the pit boss and your chips will be covered until you are back. Again, you'll post you missed blinds.
Johnnie.
Dealers appreciate when you buy your chips before coming to the table. if you need to reload, you can bring out cash. Some players will buy it. $5 and $10 bills must be changed by the dealer. New rule at niagara casinos: if you use a bill to bet or call, it will be changed immediately by the dealer. Bottom line, bring chips if possible to help speed up the game. You can bring cash out later.
13 cards can help me out with this one, it's been a while since i dealt at niagara: Chips must be left at the table if you're coming back. If you change tables now, you must bring all of your chips with you. Here's where I need 13 cards, you are able to take some cash off the table to use for a drink or to eat. I'm not sure of the amount anymore. I think it's $10.
lol...nh.
It's rare when I type faster then someone else, but it happens.
Truesay.
Ditto for tipping the waitress. I've seen players give +$20 in tips.
And when you decide to leave such a table do you just get up?
Thanks again.
You have to post as a new player in most places. Unless it's a new table starting up.
Yes you can just get up.
As of April 4th , You can't have cash on the table at Casino Niagara.
Re: where to get chips. Ask the floor when your name is called. Sometimes they will let you buy in at the table, sometimes they WANT you to buy in at the table because the dealer's tray is full. Mostly though, you will buy in at the cage. Tell the cage what you are playing and they will get you the right distribution of chips.
However once you are at the table if you need to reload, the floor is supposed to run chips for you but mostly they are lazy and tell the dealer to sell you chips.
As far as buying chips, every casino is different. Again the poker desk will tell you. Some casinos have chip runners, so you sit down put out you $cash and wait for the runner (the dealer will call one over). Some places require you to buy from the dealer and cash out at the cage. Some places want you to buy at the cage, reload if necessary from the dealer and cash out at the cage.
As for your stack on the table at a 1/2 NL game. You cannot take money off the table. If you have won a large amount and don't want to risk it, you have to take it all and leave the table, usually for an hour before you can come back for a regular buyin. The exceptions are tipping the dealer and the servers and paying for lunch if you eat while seated.
If you go to the bathroom or a for a smoke, you usually have to leave your chips on the table. This reserves your seat while you are gone. It is so highly unlikely that something will happen to any of your chips it's really not worth discussing.
Cheers...
