New table??

I'm sure this will spark some debate because I'm a little torn when this happens. I got to CN on Sunday around noon. I was given the choice of a table that has been running all night or a fresh table just opened. What would you choose in this situation? Happens quite a bit for me.

  • existing table, players are tired and you would probably get a mental advantage over players.
  • Existing. Better chance of dead money due to fatigue and tilting.
  • depends on what kind of table your are joining 1-2, 2-4-etc, But an existing table could have some monster stacks that do not allow you to have the same opportunities, granted dumb monster stacks can make for a tasty meal of profit! Sometimes monster stacks also sit in front of good players that can use their stack to their advantage

Come on, someone had to take the other side!

I play at Casino Niagara 1/2 NL. Unfortunately most of the time it's $40 min $100 max.

I asked this question for that reason. I used to take the new table every chance i got. Lately, I've been taking the existing table because there's so much money there, tired players and bad decisions. I used to take the new table due to those big stacks pushing the pots all the time but now i see it as an opportunity to make money. I just need to work on some patience here.
  • I can't remember a new table starting and everyone didn't buy 100.00
I am sure that I don't go as regularly as you, but we always call when we leave Milton and when we get there we can usually get on right away and often it is with a new table to reduce the list. If you just get there, you don't know that the big stacks aren't just new players that have already taken advantage of the tired masses and are themselves not tired. Just a different possibility to discount your reasoning. However, now second guessing myself, if you are there waiting for an opening and you get to watch the play for a time, difinitely you can have a much better feel for joining the existing table

  • This is a good question.

If you play deep stack well and you are good at post flop play.
Then you want the existing table with it's deep stacks.

If you suck at post flop play or you suck at deep stack play the go to the new table.
  • There are many factors that would come into play when making this decision. Certainly the size of the existing stacks vs. the maximum buy in would influence it as well as how long I was planning to stay myself.

I would probably sit down at a new table. This would allow me to start off with an even playing field in terms of reads on other players at the table. More importantly, I expect to take several hours to make money. I would prefer to sit down at a table with a group of people that I will probably be playing with and can learn about over that time. My worst case scenario is that I sit down at an existing table and one orbit later the big stack picks up all of his/her chips and leaves.

It actually brings up another point though. If it is possible to rail, the time waiting would be well spent scouting the existing tables to see which table would be a good one a move to if the opportunity presented itself.
