  • I plan to play on Saturday as my flight arrives at 10:20am. One in ten makes it to the main event. If the structure for the $360 is shitty, I will skip it and stick to cash game. The casino is only five minutes from my hotel.
  • Can't find the structure anywhere....if it's the same as the one at Deerfoot during the Stampede, it wasn't bad,......$5000 chips....20 minute blinds.

I called the poker room, here are the details:

    starting stack - 5,000
blinds start at 25/25 and increase every 20 minutes for first six levels
at 200/400 blinds increase to 30 minutes (there on) and antes start.

I didn't get the exact blind details, but its probably:

    25/25
    25/50
    50/100
    75/150
    100/200
    150/300

Sounds like a decent structure once the antes kick in.
  • I think I'm going to play Friday or Saturday.....maybe (but hopefully not) both.
  • I play 4/8 limit at Elbow River. I'm usually pretty tight...past 9.5 hours i've played there on a total of 3 visits i've won $410...players are horrible and pay you off nice..i love it lol.
  • I played the 15 30 there this week...bad players there as well, isn't Calgary great?

hopefully my flight arrives on time (10:20am), can drop the luggage off at the hotel and make my way over to the Stampede before the noon start time. Looking forward to checking out the Calgary poker scene. Trip report to follow. I will try to take some notes this time and make it semi interesting. To have a casino a couple blocks away from my hotel on a three day trip will be like a quasi Vegas trip :)

Pretty tight timeline.......hopefully works out for you....but you'll always have the Saturday one as backup.

I've decided to stay in Edmonton Friday, as there's a good $120 tourney that regularly draws 70 - 100 people....I'm going to play that one. Then get up early and head to Calgary Saturday morning.

I'm coming in on Saturday actually; how far is the drive from the airport to downtown? I can walk to the casino so I should be ok. Hopefully they will let me start a little late, if need be.
  • Airport to downtown should be 15-20 mins on a Saturday.

You should be OK on a Saturday.....might want to check at your hotel to make sure you can get an early check-in.

You're probably gonna like the Poker so much......you won't want to go back.

I have a pretty realistic approach to poker. Some days you make money, others you don't. If I can make a little, even the better.

Yeah.....lol.....we all should, but don't always. I was more referring to the close availibility of poker rooms though out the city.
  • have to say, Calgary poker is a little different from Ontario; casino is not that busy, not as many regular sharks at the table and lot more calling stations. The only game I have seen so far is $1/$2 at the Stampede, but with a max buy-in of $300. I think this increase in the max buy in seems to add a lot more chips to the table. Its not uncommon to see a few players at the table with over a $1,000 of chips in play (for a $1/$2 table). Chip towers seem to be the trend at this casino. Who can build the largest stack of $5 chips.

After my first two sessions, I am up $750, although a big chunk of this came from a single pot of around $600 last night. Nice that they have a casino within walking distance to the hockey arena. Lots of players showing up after the game to play a little no limit. Don't expect it to be too busy on a Monday night.
  • Weeknights are generally slow -- there was a 10 25 DC game going last night, maybe you missed it -- in the back left corner of the poker room. Stampede has a sparsity of 2 5 -- I've only seen it go there once. The 1 2 is very beatable with only a few good players in the room. The $300max buyin is muchhh better than the $200 or even $100 in Ontario.

Did you make it for the tournament? I couldn't be bothered as I'm mostly a cash player. I may be there later tonight (10-11pm and on) if you are going to be there let me know.
  • Good luck with the chip towers! Please ask the casinos when their next big tournaments with satellites will be, and try to get a copy of any structure sheets. Many of the CPT tournaments this year were in Calgary, so I have to find an excuse to visit Alberta next year. :)

the 'super' satellite tournament was actually improved at the last minute; all blind levels were changed to 30 minutes instead of the posted 20 on the website. I think they only ended up with 51 players in the $3k Sunday tournament. They ran some single table $320 satellites on the Saturday which filled up pretty quick. Don't think they had any in earlier weeks.

There was a representative there from the Canadian Poker Tour who said for next year they would be having 100 events across the country. Top 20 point earners would get sponsorship deals. I think this years winner of the Costa Rica CPT tournament will get a sponsorship deal from CPT and they will pay for 10 buy ins to major international tournaments, including the WSOP main event.

left around 11pm; were you at 'lucky lou''s table? only two 1/2 tables going at 11pm (after breaking down from 3); pretty slow on weeknights for sure. Three positive sessions so no complaints about Calgary poker.
  • Thanks. Goodbye Las Vegas/California/Atlantic City in 2009, hello Edmonton, Red Deer, Regina and Charlottetown! :D
Is there any better alternative to buying Air Canada's "Cross Canada Pass" with ten one-way flights?

You should contact Heads Up Entertainment directly as this is the company the representative worked for and they should have a lot more information on the coming 2009 schedule, promotions, etc. With all the Ontario government redtape, I wouldn't count on many Ontario based CPT tournaments. Although the changes at GBH are a good sign.

Didn't start my session until 1130pm. Worst session of the year for me, so glad noone was there to witness it:)

We did hit the bad beat at my table -- 2nd bad beat table in 2 months, wtf???
  • Was it the president of CPT/Heads Up that was there? The OLG and GBH casinos are with the CPT, so hopefully, Rama, Windsor and the Niagara casinos will also register their tournaments with the CPT.

when I looked around my table at around 10:45pm and didn't spot any fish still remaining, I quickly realized that I was the fish and it was time for me to take my $57 profit and hit the road. I think hockey nights are best time to hit this casino.

The average age of the players at this poker room is considerably higher than at other casinos I have played at before. Usually a couple seniors at each NL table and also senior women. I loved this play by this older retired woman. She is in middle position and limps for $2. She has been playing very tight poker, as you would expect. Button makes it $15 to go and he gets three callers (including the senior); flop comes 346 rainbow. checked around to the button who makes it $80 to go. There is a caller and senior pushes for $250. The other two players fold (one holds two pair) on the assumption she has trips. She shows 57 for the straight. Very impressive!
