Has anyone else done this???

So, I thought before I went to bed that I'd play a quick 5+0.50 No-Limit Hold'em STT on PS last night, so I picked a table and paid my entry fee. The table popped up and I read the title bar...

"Fixed Limit Omaha Hi-Lo"

Well, being my very first time ever playing any kind of Omaha, I immediately scoured the net for some information on starting hands, basic strategy, etc, etc.

I did fairly well for my first time playing and was in third chip position for a majority of the game. The final hand did me in, when the board showed A 3 6 x x and I held 2 5 in my hand. The pot was massive at this point and I found myself all-in in the middle of a raising war. The first player turned over a full house for the hi pot. I turned over my hand and thought that I had won low.... until a VERY long pause from the game finally turned the last hand over showing 2 4; the only thing that could beat me. :(

All in all, even though it was a mistake that I entered, I found it really, really interesting. May have to do some actual reading on it. :)

  • BBC Z's Low Limit O8 playable hand Quicksheet:

    1) Any A2xx is a great hand, better if it's suited. A23x is a wicked hand.
    2) A3xx is the ace is suited is playable.
    3) 4 cards to broadway (T or better) are good for a preflop call of a single bet. Includes KKQT or KKJJ or AKQJ.
    4) AAxx without one suited ace is a FOLD preflop.

Never preflop raise unless you are trying to knock out players from calling. If you raise great hands you will get hands to fold that you want loose calling.

Everything else is TRASH. Throw it away. 23xx 6677 6789 forget it.

You continue with your hand on the flop iff:
    1) Two cards to an 8 low flop and you are not counterfeited.
    2) You flop the nuts or a draw to the high nuts
    3) You FOLD YOUR HIGH (unless it's made) if 3 low cards flop and you don't have the nut low.
    4) Get ready to fold your A3 low if the 2 doesn't hit even if 3 low cards flop. Very dangerous to make a costly 2nd best hand
    5) You fold if only 1 card to make a low hits the flop and you have no draw at any kind of high with teeth (ie a straight or better)

    You fold if:
    1) It it raises and reraised before it gets back to you and you don't have the nuts (low or high). You are getting squeezed. Cut your losses and get out.
    2) You make a small (under T) set on the flop. Forget it, you'll get beat on a higher bpoat.

You'll make all your decisions on the flop. So unless a brutal scare card comes down, play it to the river.

River rule #1: Forget about crying calls if it's 4 way on the river. It's not holdem, someone does have the nuts.
River rule #2: If you only have the nut low on the river and zero high, Raise with 4 players calling bets. Only call the river if 3 players are present.

I've been using a strategy thats not much more than this and I'm up quite a few bucks at O8 and have been doing very well in O8 Limit tournaments.

Disclaimer: This is a simple O8 strat for people who find themselves in a game they dont understand. I'm more than willing to post more O8 stuff if anyone is interested.. I've pretty much given up Hold'em as a result.
  • I Love omaha8 though lately I have been trying out Omaha high only... Almmost as much action but no split pots. Still I have to say omaha8 can be highly profitable. Mostly because most players do not know how to read their hands and their draws/redraws.
  • Well, last night was interesting, so I headed over to Party to try some Omaha8 ring games (.5/1) and a 10+1 tournament.

With me having played O8 for less than 24 hours, I'm happy to report I placed 3rd, and have made $10 in the ring games so far. The odd part about the ring games is that I never really feel that my roll is in danger. For a small price, I either know I'm good or not. (With the occational wrong guess)

    So far, so good!
