I'm terrible at reading players

For live games, what are the main things that you should really look for that people tend to do?

And how do you read people online?

This is a major weakness of mine as I usually think that I have a read on someone but it turns out my read is completely wrong.

  • I'm no pro but I'll give this a shot. On-line it's all about betting patterns. Play tight and watch your opponents for a while even when you're not in the hand. It's important to remember how much they bet and on what street (if you're playing stud/hold 'em/omaha) in relation to community cards or face-up cards. When they show down a hand re-play the hand in your mind. That will give you an indication of what they do with that type of hand.

    Hold 'em example:

A player shows 7-8. If the flop gave 4 to a straight did they bet? How much? Perhaps they checked to try to get a free card. When they made the straight did they keep betting strong or slow down to feign being scared of the possible straight? Once you see them do a similar thing with a particular type of hand a few times you've picked up a betting pattern. The better players vary their play so you have to tread carefully around them.

    Just practice watching people.

    All the best!

Mike Caro's Book of Poker Tells is a must for all players.
