Which poker books to purchase?

I am going to buy a poker book off amazon probably (i hear they have the best prices) and I am wondering what I should buy? I have a couple e-books but I would like to have one I don't have to read at the computer. What do you guys recommend as the best poker book overall. Maybe for a tournament/cash game mix of information. Super System? Theory of poker? any of sklansky books? Harrington books? Which ones?

  • Theory and Practice of Poker - Skalanksy

    Harrington Volumes 1, 2, 3

I'm reading 3 of those 4, their very good.
  • Poker books are so specialized now, the piece of information you need to include is what type of games do you play (SNG, MTT, Cash), what style (Limit/No Limit/Omaha), what stakes (Small, mid, high)?

It's unlikely you'll find a book that handles MTT and Cash games in the same book to any benefit, you may have to purchase more than one.
  • i play low limit cash game mostly but i also play SnG's, im not worried too much about learning too much about MTT's right now. i play mostly $5 SnG and .10/.25 cash game

The best book ever for limit cash games advanced my game about 500% just in terms of how to use the flop and betting the flop to your advantage.

    SNG's I hear this is a keeper:

Harrington's books are great for MTT's and if you enjoy scenerio discussions.

I'd also throw the Little blue and green books from Phil Gordon out there if you can get them cheap because they are great books to read when you want something poker but want it in a small bite-sized portion. Each 'chapter' covers his thought process during a single hand.

  • Harrington for tournaments; he also has two new books on cash games coming out shortly.
  • great thanks a lot guys
  • whats the shipping fees to canada on amazon? i see there is a nice free shipping to US with $25 purchase?
  • Harrington Volumes 1, 2, 3
this book is generate for tournment, but it will give you a general guide line of how to play poker, and you can adapt the difference between tourny and cash game.
it's very good book, better the supersystem
i would have to say, so far, the series is best money spent

If you don't recognize that cash games and tourney games play differently enough to warrant different resources.. You are making a mistake.

If you don't recognize that a 2/5 limit game resemembles almost nothing of a 1/2 NL game, you are making a mistake.

Use the best tools that are available for your games not just some other book that contains a little bit of general information for you and a whole bunch of other advice for a game you don't even play.
  • Just watch Poker After Dark for one or two weeks.

You'll learn all you need to know on how to play anything from 2/4Limit, 5/10 No Limit to a 10K buy in MTT.
  • Haddon, I cannot believe you did not take the opportunity to shill for Angel Largay's book on LLNL Hold 'Em. Seriously good book, that I bought after reading your original post on it. Made some good coin as a result of that book.

I agree, excellent resource. Too bad I have to return my copy to its rightful owner...unless my dog 'accidentally' eats it something before they Royal ;)
  • is Largay's book called "No-Limit Texas Hold'em: A Complete Course"?
  • That's the one, yes
  • Mike Caro's Book of Poker Tells
    Super System
  • Theory of Poker is the bible.

    Harrington is the Tournament Bible.

As far as playing online cash games there is no book published that is a great fit. Buy a ream of paper, visit this link, and give your printer a workout. This advice is waayyy more practical than anything in print.
  • Also pick up harringtons cash game books 1 and 2 that just were released...

Excellent resource Caddy, I may be up all night and the rest of the week reading everything on the link that you pointed to.. Fantastic...

anybody read them yet? care to give a review.
i am reading Angel Largay's book now
    after that
i have two more book to read.
then i'll decided if i want to get the harrington on cash V1 and V2.
  • One of the best tournament books out there is one that you would never think to be that great. Full Tilt Tournament strategy. It is simply amazing, but its not a beginner book at all. IMO Super System is probably the most overated book ever, only the non-holdem section was useful. TOP I didn't understand so much when I first read it, I have to read it again sometime.

It is sold out on amazon where I bought my copies from. 2+2 had some great reviews of the book (the forum members, not the forum ;))

They are on amazon.ca right now for 22 bucks a piece but they are sold out. If you buy them off of 2+2 it will cost you an extra couple of bucks.
  • What would people say is the best book for Online NL Holdem MTTs? I just ordered Harrington's book, is this the best, or would you recommend another. The full tilt one looks cool, but unfortunately not available on PokerStars.com with points ;)

  • The new apestyles, Rizen, PearlJammer book just came out. Haven't read it yet, but can't imagine it being anything but great. Doubt they'll have it in pokerstars store yet though.
  • Oh, just buy a shit load of books. Even Phil Gordon has some decent advice in his three tomes. You'll figure out how to separate the wheat from the chaff, and the fish from their $$$. I've got my poker library trimmed down by about half a dozen now, which still leaves me with three dozen or so titles. Some of these have only a few tidbits of good advice, at least for where my game is at right now. Some have more, and leave me with road maps for where (and how) I can improve. I find it interesting to skim some of the older ones, if only to see what ideas I have let slip away over time.

Oh, and SS1 and SS2 are not worth the money, IMO.
