First trip to Vegas

So what should I do?

I will be flying in on a Wednesday on business and flying out the following Wednesday. I will be busy all day every day until 5:00 p.m. or so. I think I'll be staying at the Luxor. I should then get 5-6 hours of sleep a night which leaves me some free time :).

I'm sure I'll be able to find a good casino or two ;). Any Casinos hold NLHE tournaments starting in the evenings?

Where should I go for night life? I was thinking along the lines of a young hip dance club.

  • Go to the Walgreens closest to your end of the strip and tell the 2nd cashier from the left that Dave says you are supposed to meet Mandy.

Well I am happily married and plan to keep it that way.

I will be staying at the Monte Carlo. I'll try some of the differently night tournaments. A couple at the Mirage look good.

Wait...you can be BOTH?? wow, who knew.. ;)
  • goto the venetian and play the 12pm 150 freeze out. 7500 chips 1/2 hour blinds....usually get 90-110 people....they pay out the final table. It is filled with tourists and guys who over value AK ;)

And that is why you are looking for some good clubs and leaving the wife at home :)
  • Maybe the brother likes to dance. hee - hee - hee
  • Lol, yes actually. The wife can't come this time as we can't arrange care for this kids this time of year with our parents being snowbirds. I do like to dance but since I probably won't by myself it's just to listen to some good music while I drink myself under the table.

That side of Vegas will be wasted me, I don't even go to strip clubs.

The wife and I are starting to plan another trip to Vegas later in the year though which will be much more interesting ;)
  • If you like the outdoors at all I highly recommend driving out to the lesser visited Valley of Fire (vs the well known Red Rock Canyon). If you're not into outdoor stuff you can just drive through it and see some cool landscapes. I usually find it's a nice getaway several days into being on the strip.
  • This link offers pretty much everything else. only 37 more days til I go

  • I personally found the Venetian to be my favourite poker room during my visits. Well run, good dealers, and the cocktail waitresses are usually not too bad to look at.

The Bellagio and Wynn have very nice rooms as well. Caesars is not bad.

A couple of the Binions (downtown) tourneys have good value if you take advantage of the extra add-on.

    Have fun and good luck.
  • Well I am back. That was a pretty fun week. I only played one tournament because I was disgusted with how fast it was. $2500 in chips 15 minute blinds. Once I adjusted to the pace I started trying to keep enough chips to stick around. About an hour into it I got a good pot and my chip stack went up to around 4,000. A couple hands later I look down at pocket Qs and raise it up with one caller. No A or K came so I bet again on the flop and got called. Still no A or K so I moved all in on the guy and he called showing his pocket Js. There's no draws out there but of course he catches his 2 outter to pretty much knock me out.

So I stuck with cash tables the rest of the time. I sat down with either $120 or $140 each time I played. Of the 8 times I played I lost it once, broke even once and walked away with $100~ to $200 6 times. I played mostly at the Monte Carlo as I like the intimate size of it. I did play at the Madalay Bay as well.

As for the bar I spent a lot of money on alcohol at the Rockhouse a couple nights.

All in all it was a good trip.

Mandalay bay is a good place if you want to try to hit a hand jackpot.. but the Monte Carlo? Why not go to the MGM? Or even better the Venetian, Ceasars, Bellagio or Wynn..
  • Pretty much just because that's where I was staying and I was making money there. I figured I wouldn't likely ever take home much money judging the people playing there but I figured I could consistantly walk out ahead. Tables were friendly. Usually half the table was regulars who assumed I was a typical tourist. It was funny, the last night I think everyone at the table was a regular including a couple dealers except for me... and I still took $150 in an hour.
  • good job; nice to see some money come out of Vegas and return to the GWN. I guess you had a productive week with all those late night poker sessions. Good use of your meal allowance :)
  • I won about $600 in 3 hours playing 1/2NL at Monte Carlo in '05..and I was sick. Way more than I've won in any one ring session at any of the other place. Could just be the kind of clientelle the Monte Carlo attracts.. or could have just been a good day.. though there was another guy at the table who made almost twice what I did. Half the table were fish who didn't mind reaching back into their pockets.

Ambience wise though.. ugh, small room, back corner and only a couple tables were open.
