I feel like a yo-yo

I have been playing poker for a little over a year now, don't have a big bankroll, been playing mostly $2.25 to $5.50 6 to 18 player NL sit n go games. My question is do you guys and gals run into big swings in your games, I mean like this month I have gone up to 11 games in a row with out cashing and then I go and cash in 15 out of the next 20, now I an back in a rut 6 and counting, and I can play the best poker I know how and I keep getting sucked out time and time again, is this normal? I have been reading books on poker, try to play tight but these swings keep on happening. Any advice would be appretiated.
Thanks for letting me rant, getting frustrated with this crap.:)

  • In a word..yes,it's absolutely normal. At these limits you'll get people chasing all day long and it seems they catch in bunches. The only advice i can give you is to keep playing good solid poker and keep your eye on the long term. The problem I have always had is getting the dumb idea in my head of playing bad hands because well they're doing it and winning why can't I. It doesn't work that way. Read books and the forums and keep focused on playing sound fundamental poker. It will work in the long run . I know..been there done that got the t-shirt.
  • It's called variance,

sometimes it can be hell..i've been through runs where i've been up 4-5k in one day to dropping 6k in a session.

sounds like you have pretty decent br management, keep it up!

your best bet is to change up your limits and games,

for instance, enter some cheap omaha sng's, play some limit sng's or cash games.

It sounds like all you play is NL, you need to round off your game a bit, try some different games, styles, and become a better all around player.
  • what the above 2 said already, i went through a 16 outta 20 games in november itm, january i did not cash in 14 straight games, and currently 2 outta like the last 11.

good variance please come back sooooooooooon, i miss you!!!!!!!!!!!

keep good spirits(or try to) during the bad run, i am following that by obv and others on this forum and other forums i am on, it worked the last game i cashed in, i got sucked out on but typed in the chat box, i was ahead and i am still happy with my play, noone fked with me after that.

It has nothing to do with the limit, it has everything to do with poker.
  • ummmmmmmmmm, not true

the lower levels like 1 dollar and 5 dollar have more rookies and people who have no clue, thus more suckouts against you, thus higher variance,

but on the flip side there are idiots on 10 dollar and 20 dollar sit n go's but not as much,

    anyone else agree with this?

thats what i just notice mind you

  • I agree.... the lower the limits the more people will chase down a straight of flush, because it's not really costing them much....

I play in a lot of 60-100 dollar sngs and that happens a lot less then in the lower limits
  • Personally I'm pretty tired of the "lower limits" excuse

To a degree.. yes.. higher variance, but in my experience, it's never as much variance's fault as people like to credit it for.

Examine your own game, save hand histories, discuss with friends, read more books... I'm not saying you're bad or nothing... but we need to remember as collective that we're often very easy on ourselves and our mistakes..

  • I've played sngs from $5 to $500 and cash from .25/5nl to 10/20nl. I can tell you the higher limits aren't some ivory tower where the best hand wins. It is soooooooooooooooo ridiculous to think that you will have longer bad runs at low limits because of a higher ratio of bad players that I'm just lost for any more words to type on the subject.
  • I have mentioned in another one of my posts, patience and timing is key. In lower limit games I have found that it is important to see flops, because alot of people go all in early, it is important to be patient. A,q off suit is not a strong hand if 4 others have gone all in, and when q,7 suited hits people get upset because they were outdrawn, when in fact they should have layed it down and let the 4 donkeys that are all in knock each other out. Consistency in your play, undertsanding the limits, and the people at the table are also important components of improving your game.
  • over a year now,... $2.25 to $5.50 6 to 18 player NL sit n go games.

Dude, I admire your courage to be able to play that level for an entire year.
I have been reading books on poker

If you really were, you'd have a better idea of the variance monster that lurks in everyones closet.

  • Thanks everyone for the replys to my question, alot of good information. BBC Z I wish I could play at higher limits, just not in the budget. I put $50.00 in full tilt in Jan and made a new years resolution to try to build on that bank roll, I've been as high as $137 and as low as $56, I'll keep at it till I hit $200 then move up to in limits. I chart all my games on a spread sheet to see where I stand. I will read more poker books to help my game. My wife just informed me of a poker seminar at the waterloo inn on march 29, she heard it on kool fm, signed up, hope to learn somthing.
    Again thanks to everyone.
  • What are the details of this Waterloo poker seminar? If the instructor is SirWatts instead of Phil Hellmuth, I might go! :)

  • Check out the kool fm web site (koolfm .com), It is by some group called Just Jacks, cost $85.00, plus a chance to win a seat to the wsop main event in a tournament for participants of the seminar, starts at 12pm end at 5pm march 29. Haven't heard of them before, seems legit, hope to learn more to improve my game.
