Vancouver Area Casinos - What kind of action?

Will be going to Vancouver in May and wondering about the typical action at the various casinos.

I'm mostly a limit player (preferably 20-40 and up but will play 10-20 if it's the only game)

I'll be staying at the River Rock, but I know there's also the Edgewater about half hour away.

What are the typical games they spread? Are they juicy?
How about around big tournament time?
Which place is better?

River Rock will be holding a series of tournaments May 5 - 13 "Coast to Coast Championships"

May 5: $500 Buyin - Max 550 players
May 6: $220 Super Satalites (to the $1000 & $3000 events)
May 7: $1000 Buyin - Day 1
May 8: $1000 Buyin - Day 2
May 9: $3000 Buyin - Day 1
May 10: $3000 Buyin - Day 2
May 11: Final 6 players for the $1k and $3k events
May 12: TBA
May 13: TBA (these maybe a smaller $200 NLHE event and possibly a PLO event - not finalized)

You guys heard it here first - don't think this has been announced anywhere yet.

  • I know that river rock is definately the biggest poker room there. When I lived in Nanaimo, everybody I played cards with said that River Rock was the place to go for casino poker in bc.
  • When I went to Vancouver, Edgewater was re designing their poker room. At the time I was there, there was only a 3/6 Limit game going on, but after a few hours, they did open a 5/10 KILL game. Timing wasn't great though, middle of the week and all, but from what I understand, their poker room now is supposed to be quite impressive.
  • Guess I better give my two cents as one of two Vancouver residents on the board.

By the by, WTF ever happened to Harthgosh?

    Anyhow,

River Rock is a pretty great place, 25 tables in the room, running limit and no limit hold em 24/7/365. I have heard that they get an Omaha game going once in a blue moon, but it's rare.

Limit games typically offered are 2/4, 4/8, and 4/8 full kill. There is sometimes a 3/6 full kill interest list, but I've never seen the game actually get going.

No limit is mostly 1/2, or 2/5, with some 5/10 as well. The 5/10 game looks to be pretty deep most of the time, but I don't play it so I can't give you any feedback.

Their Website offers a pdf of their current tournament listings. They offer low buy nl hold em tourney's three times daily typically, with buy ins of 30 bucks. 1500tc to begin, and I think 15 minute levels. They move pretty quick, and you need to be more than a little lucky to win one. With that said, the buy ins are quite low, and they typically sell out with a first place pay out of about a grand. I have heard lately that they are looking to expand theit tourney offerings to include Omaha, and Limit hold em events, as well as mixed games.

There is a bad beat jackpot which sometimes gets pretty large. I've seen it as high as 140, 000. The 2/4 limit games are crazy action packed when it gets that high, and are a lot of fun to play in if you like to play a lot of hands and don't mind a lot of variance.

The wait times vary depending on the game you want, but you can call ahead, 604 273 1895

I have only played at Edgewater a couple of times. It's the only Casino left in Vancouver proper now that the Broadway Casino has closed down(it was also owned by Great Canadian, which owns River Rock). Edgewater has a large poker room, and I think it tends to play a little higher. Limit games are typically, 48, 4/8 kill, 10/20 and 20/40.

Not sure about NL games, but guranteed there are a lot of 1/2 games.

They also have an early bird tournament every day. I think the buy ins are a little higher there, but you do get more chips in your starting stack, and the levels are a tiny bit more friendly.

The website refers to 2/4 as a daily game, but I have never once seen it spread.

There are two other casinos in the area, Starlight Casino in New Westminster, and the Boulevard Casino in Port Coquitlam. Both have poker rooms that I have never once played in.

You might also check out www.604poker.com, they have lots of reviews and info about Vancouver poker.

    Hope this helps.

remember my offer of a pint to any forum members who find their way to my town.

    Cheers
  • Thanks for the reply dinobot - I called the cardroom (riverrock) and the floor sup indicated they expect to have 20-40, 50-100 limit games running during the big tournaments.

Do you see this happenning or are they just blowing hot air, trying to hype it up?
  • I can see this happening actually.

I've seen Brad Booth in there on more than one occassion and we all know he doesn't play small.

Vancouver has no shortage of money...far from it. I'd be willing to guess that games this big stand a great chance of being played.

If you are looking to play that big though, you can buy me a pint.
  • Just the hotel at the riverrock is gonna cost me almost $2k so I've got to play a bit bigger to try and recoup the expenses - short of winning one of the tournaments.

Regarding the pint - anytime my friend - just shoot me a pm. I'll be in Sarnia end of March and my next tournament stop will be Vancouver.
  • Ok - here's a noob question... What is a "full kill" table?

Well, in a kill game when a player wins a two pots in a row above a certain amount then the kill is considered on and the stakes are doubled. The player who won the pot is then required to post a blind of double the usual blind.

So in a 4-8 game with a full kill, the stakes would go to 8-16, and the player holding the kill button would post a blind of 8 dollars with the regular blind posting their regular 2 and 4 dollar blinds.

Some rooms spread a "half kill game" where the stakes are raised by 50% when the kill is on. So it would be 6-12.

Ironic man, I was born and raised in Sarnia, and now live in Vancouver. You're doing a weird tour of my life.

If you want any info on where to eat, drink and stay in that smelly burg, let me know.

just to add to that, the player with the kill buton still gets the option to check or raise preflop
  • After some investigation it looks like Vancouver poker is comprised almost exclusively NL hold'em and small limit hold'em games.

Very little in the realm of middle limit hold'em. Called both Edgewater and River Rock and they have 1/2, 2/5 NLHE. 4/8 Limit HE with Kill.
  • What's the effect of the Kill game?
Does it punish loose players since they will play in and therefore win more pots?

I've never played in a kill game but I would assume that during a "kill" pot, it would encourage a greater sense of gamble since there is more money involved. Greater chance of winning a BIG pot.

Sort of like when a someone straddles and then someone re-straddles. There's more dead money in the pot and the limits are bigger so bigger pot - more gamble for loose players.

I actually would not let the kill pot/straddle affect my play - just play my game regardless, maybe try to isolate the straddler/blinds if possible.

When the Holiday Inn Casino was open there was a regular 20-40 kill game going, and that thing played insanely big. Regularly 20 to 30 Grand on the table, just nuts.

You may try checking out that 604poker forum, and post on their boards, you may be able to put together a group who will play fairly high.

    The casino will spread whatever.
