rumour of poker at ontario racetracks?

I was at Lac Leamy the other day and a couple different people mentioned that poker will be coming to the Rideau-Carleton Racetrack/Slots. One guy claimed to have inside information. I called Rideau and they said it won't be soon but it is something they are looking at.

Has anyone heard anything regarding this? Man would that be a feeding frenzy. I know Florida introduced poker to many of their racetracks/slots.

  • there is a rumour up here to regarding georgian downs in innisfil, they have bought some property next to their existing site, but only have heard them expanding the slot area and nothing on adding tables, but then again the whole project is very mum.
  • i can not say anything officially as i am a commercial contractor and have strong ties to large projects. I can only say that plans are in the works to add a number of hotels and a large gaming floor to the woodbine racetrack. If this is found to be true, i could see a number of other projects taking place and a slight change in any current laws. Thats all i really know and again these are only rumours. I am hopeful though.
  • According to a supervisor, in the security side of things, at Woodbine: Not anytime in the next 2-3 years. Sounds like someone might be getting their ducks lined up for a future costing of election promises.

As in: Promise oodles of goodies to the voting masses, and then open up the gaming market to pay for it all. AFTER they vote you into office, of course. Oddly enough, I'm okay with it.
  • maybe, maybe not. My contacts have no political obligations or influences.
  • It makes sense to do it. For years I have been saying to anyone that listens that Rideau-Carleton Raceway, with all of their land is a perfect spot to open a permanent poker room. All that they offer is slot machines so I never go there.

The Gananoque casino (Between Toronto and Ottawa on Hwy 401) does have a small poker room and also offers table games, so I do not know why Rideau Carleton does not (other than the fact they make so much from the slot machines).
  • Sounds interesting. To be honest, I've never even heard of that kind of stuff ???
  • Woodbine removing slot machines for poker? Lol. If anything, they'd try to get the space for approved for poker and them flip it over to slots asap.

LOL... very true... though poker is a constant win-win (granted the people show up) and would add something else to attract potential slot players and horse race bettors.
  • to attract potential slot players and horse race bettors.

Have you set foot in Woodbine Friday or Saturday night? Attracting players isn't an issue.. they can't even accomidate the people they do draw..

    True... good point :)
  • I would think that if they are going to do poker tables that they would be the electronic kind. I can't see them taking out slot machines to replace them with dealer run poker tables.

    Just a thought
  • I think the theory would be that they'd place the poker tables on the '2nd' floor where the racetrack betting places are. I hardly believe that all that space ever gets used anymore.

2nd or 3rd floor? 2nd is usually somewhat busy, but 3rd is usually empty when I am there.
  • We were playing at the Western Fair on Monday night and my buddy was talking to a couple of employees working at the charity casino. They stated that London would probably have a game room of tables in about 2 years.
