Vegas advice

Popping my vegas cherry on Oct 10-14. Would like some advice from the vegas veterans out there. We're going without any rooms booked, our plan is to just stay where we're playing that particular night. understanding is that you get the casino rate with a few hours of play. Is that a sound plan or should we book something before we leave? Or maybe we'll chug some redbull and do a 48/72 hr session. Which poker rooms are good for low limit action, any tournaments? And what other non-poker things/sights should we look into in case we lose all our money the first day.

  • I had a great time in Vegas... not sure if you read my trip reports posted on this site, but the Golden Nugget has great one-table tournaments. Multis are everywhere, particularly the Orleans. I've heard that the Four Queens is a good, cheap place to stay downtown. If you haven't read the reports, you might want to check them out... they're somewhere in this section of the forum, around pages 16 and 17. If you have read the reports, well, that's all I got when it comes to Vegas lol. Have a great time, and good luck!

    Cheers,

  • I wouldn't go for the stay where we play plan - just spend a bit of time researching beforehand and you can get super cheap rooms on the strip (imperial palace) or downtown (4 queens or LV club).

There is low limit action almost anywhere. If you enjoy the big ugly family disneyland crowds try Excalibur, they've got over 30 tables with nothing higher than 4 -8. There's lots of good local-filled small entry tourneys at the Orleans. If you're looking for bigger ones the Mirage is the classiest choice and the nugget's got daily satellites to their bigger evening tourneys.

But my favorite touney (favorite cause I won it) is the cramped evening 40$ unlimited 20$RB tourney at the Sahara. Free sandwiches unlimited rebuys and unlimited COCKTAILS for your busted railbird friends as they stumble and scream for you at the final table.

    Best of luck

  • Thanks for the insight guys. I just booked our flight today. 11-14th, 275 a person. Gonna keep checking the rooms this weekend to see if we can get something good. One more question, do you suggest staying downtown or on the strip. Since we won't have a vehicle, we were thinking on the strip would be better as we could walk around and try out more of the casinos.

Oh and open invitation to all pokerforum members to skip work/school for a few days and join me in Sin City.
  • You should look into packages with hotels and flights. Usually they come by pretty cheap.
  • Stay on Freemont. Good action and nugget, binion's. Lots of small limit games there. Not to many big games(10-20 and up) but they do go sometimes. Cheap rooms if that is what you want. As for strip hotel games. It's only a bus ride away. The bus comes every 5-10 min. And only costs $2. The bus runs on the strip is only 1-2 blocks away from any hotel on Freemont. The same distance you have to walk after getting off the bus. Strip hotels are getting big and back off the strip walking is harder as most are 15 min. to get to the next poker room anyways.

Action is all over Vegas now. Just came back from 9 days there. Excaliber, totally fun. 1-2 no limit 100.00 buy in was a blast. No big games.
Mirage and Belegio, have tons-o-tables. But nothing of the same they do not compete against each other.
    Mirage, 3-6, 6-12, 10-20, 20-40, 40-80. 2-5NLH
    Bel., 4-8, 5-10, 15-30, 30-60, 60-120, 5-5 nlh,
  • Im in Vegas the same time as you. I'm staying at the flamingo, should be ok I think. I'm probably going to stick to the $100 or so buy in nl games.
  • march and my 21st birthday cannot come soon enough!
    good luck and have fun
  • www.cheapovegas.com is a great resource for going to vegas. Where to get cheap and free meals, cheap hotels, etc. The site also gives maps and the limits of games all over town.
    Good Luck
  • I booked online, it usually is the cheapest way to go for hotels and rental cars in vegas. If you play enough at the hotel you have booked, at the end of the stay they will comp you and give you a nite or 2 free depending on the comp value you have saved up.

For low limit tourneys, if you are up for 10AM, the Plaza, mandalay bay and sunset station (out in henderson) have some well run tourneys for low buy ins. 25-50 USD. The luxor has cheap tourneys as well daily at 12pm and 830pm, but I didn't like the structure of the luxor tourneys. 250TC with 15 min limit levels for the 1st hour then no limit after that. A crap shoot, the gf busted on the bubble when we played. Binion's daily tourneys cost about $110 USD after rebuy and add on just to let you know. Gotta stop there, just because of the history.

Low limit cash games are plentiful, just be prepared to get rivered! I played 2-4 at the sunset station (old folks who are retired and just hangin out havin a good time) and made a nice profit. The tells were so obvious I couldn't keep myself in my seat! I had to leave when the gf finally busted in the ladies only hold 'em tourney.

THE poker room in vegas is at the Bellagio. I had such a great time there, just star gazing. I met TJ CLoutier, Evelyn Ng, Amir Vahidi, Mel Judah, Tony Ma... just to nae a few. It was poker heaven there. Make sure you stop by the bellagio poker room!

The hotel I stayed at had one of the better rated poker rooms in vegas, the orleans. They had a WPPA mahor tourney the week I was there, so their daily tourneys were put on hold. check out www.orleanscasino.com for details on the daily games they have there.

well you should stay on the strip, i live near belliagios and thats where i mainly play
  • Just booked a room at the Excalibur for 49.99 a night. Pretty good deal for a good strip location I think. So everything is taken care of now, monday can't come fast enough. Will post a trip report. Thanks for all the help guys.
  • im goin to vegas when i turn 21 in may, going to be there in time to watch the last few days of wsop
  • Okay, I'm leaving tomorrow night but there's a slight problem. I totally forgot Monday was a holiday and that banks are closed. I can't touch the money in my cdn chequing account but I have money in my U.S account but I don't have debit card access for that account. So how can I get some U.S. funds to vegas? Can I wire the money to the casino i'm staying at? is that an option? I'd appreciate any help on this.
