Do you play better sober or intoxicated?

I notice that my game gets a little better if I have had a drink or two to cool my nerves for both live and online play. I think it allows me to make better reads and relaxes me to make better calls. Obviously too many drinks and you want to play every hand, but I was just wondering what everyone else thought, do you play better after a drink or two, or when you are stone sober?

  • I have to agree with you. I play far too tight when I,m cold sobre. I play on about 20 poker sites. At the start of a tournament I don,t know how many times I have folded winning hands to relatively small preflop raises. Also post flop I buckle to big river bets that I would have won had I called. A flush river card and a big bet can scare me off when I should call the bluff. I will also show a little more aggression with my bets when i have the betting hand.
  • Same here. A few drinks is perfect. It loosens me up and I think I get better reads and pay better attention. Plus the donkeys don't quite get under my skin as much ;).
  • I certainly do play alot looser after a wobbly pop or two, but to say I play better? I don't believe so. I just make riskier moves and calls. Sometimes they pay off for me, sometimes I get burnt, but either way, I'm a happy drunk ;)
  • My biggest sit n go win ($100.00) was when I came home from the bar pissed, I had just started playing on poker that month, I think I played every hand lol. A couple of beer does relax me, but I will not play drunk again, because I suck when I do.
  • Graham if you want to see some quality drunken poker, come to Royal Cup V.
  • I dont' think a drink or two makes any difference.

    Blinded drunk works for me.
  • I used to think I played well when I was smashed but I have finally realized it is the opposite. I am an ATM when I am drunk. A few beers is OK but over 10 I become a doner.

You saw every time I went to the Bar! LOL

Are you going to the Royal Cup?

  • i would say sober > drunk but i dont think a few drinks would hurt TOO much..
  • I have found the following to be true for me

As alcohol consumption increases bankroll decreases.
I'm sure there is a mathematical formula in there but I suck at math.

Anyway, my biggest problem when I drink is if I have a losing session I am unable to stop. I just keep moving up levels and pissing away my bankroll to the point where I wake up with nothing left over except a hangover.

Sounds vaguely familiar...especially the hangover part (2 days later I still feel like shit, thanks BigE).

cept I generally come out ahead....

Snowflake...first round at Royal 5 is on you, i'll be there to collect.
  • i find a couple drinks does help me focus and relax more so than usual. i've had quite a few deep finishes in mtts online while sitting at home and having a few drinks (obviously not getting trashed though).
  • After a keg party I held an impromptu poker game at my house. I couldn't see straight. I went through 18 buy ins. Luckily we weren't playing for very big stakes.

Sounds good to me, see you there. I've been practicing, not getting any better but can now drink more than one, Did you think I meant practicing poker, don't be crazy, wouldn't want to change my "Not sure of the odds, but my curiosity has the best of me" instincts. If you don't want me to call, tell me, other than that, I might call anything

  • I have only played cards drunk once...

It was a $5 rebuy at Bristol.

I remember that I needed to take first to make money...but I did, so now I'm confused on the whole subject of drinking +poker. ;)

This sounds like the argument I hear all the time at the casino. "I can only play bad cards because I only win with bad starting hands."
  • hey, you want to go to the casino right now?

Edit: Actually I'm in my jammies, but in a little bit? Call me.
  • kristy in jammies, SWEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTT:) :)

  • I don't like to get drunk. I'll take the wacky tobbacky any day over booze. As you can see I don't like to take my sunglasses off...
  • I find a couple drinks lets me think straight. After 2, it's water.

Unless it's morning, in Vegas, when 10 screwdrivers = "it's only orange juice, honey!"

"Aces always get cracked so I have to play these hands"
  • for me i gotta play sober. but one or two drinks help relax me
  • For what its worth i play better sober.

I know exactly what you are talking about :(
  • I've never attempted to play poker while I've been drinking. Im a quick drunk so I never touch alcohol while gambling.
  • I have a bad time playing drunk, and the biggest problem for me is tilt control to be honest. If I lose a big pot, I get upset with myself for even playing in this state. The game stops being fun, but I continue to play hoping to recover the losses which increases my negative feelings and so on and so forth.

If I end up in a badly losing session, I'll really give myself shit for a while.
