Bad Beat Jackpot at a Poker Club

I was playing 2/5 on Friday night and the club I play at has now instituted a bad beat jackpot of $2 per hand. To me this is a total cash grab on top of the high hand of the night, etc. Considering it takes Seneca usually months to payout their bad beat jackpot, it could be decades before this is actually paid out. They only have cash games two nights per week and usually a single table.

Have you ever heard of a club having a bad beat jackpot?

  • Yes I have, but not that pricey. And the couple I do know usually pay out either nightly or weekly. $2/hand is steep, especially if its over the rake.

What are the requirements to "win"?

    Yes, It's usually theft.

    I hate bad beat jackpots.

BINGO! it is a total cash grab - in no way does the payout come close to reflecting the amount collected. 1 dollar is bad enough but 2 bucks is brazen thievery. i put any amount taken out for a 'high hand jackpot' in the same category, too.

just consider it to be part of the rake. the only redeeming feature is it keeps the bad players coming out. if, in spite of the 'rake' playing there is more +ev than other places, keep playing, otherwise let the owners know you'll be moving to a new club that doesn't rip you off. once in a while they listen, unlike some of those casinos about an hour south of here...
  • Is it a downtown club? 2 people told me about a downtown club that was taking $2/hand & also that their jackpot stayed at $1000 despite them continuing to collect $2/hand. Most players were oblivious to the fact they were taking out $2/hand, & the ones that knew the constant jackpot didn't make sense usually ended up playing somewhere else instead of making a big deal of it in front of the oblivious ones.
  • Raking $2 extra for a bad beat jackpot does not make sense. I estimated that it takes an average of about 100,000 hands for the bad beat jackpot at Seneca Casino to be won. Assuming similar requirements at this club, it would take over 3 years for the bad beat jackpot to be won! If the club refuses to remove the $2 BBJ rip-off or refuses to reduce the $10+ rake when the table becomes short-handed, leave the club immediately.

If you are now playing 2/5 instead of 1/2, be prepared for the mind-spinning variance  and much bigger bankroll required. The best place to play 2/5+ NL is at Fallsview or other casino, unless there is a club that has a maximum $5 rake.

  • the only way i'd pay that if the bad beat requirements were like.. 2 pair over 2 pair.. lol...
  • I have played in clubs that had bad beats but they only took $1 per hand only from decent pots. $2 taken out of each hand is heavy considering theres also a rake and tipping the dealer.
