Charity poker buy in help

I am helping out with a fundraiser dinner/dance by running 1-2NL cash games.

I was thinking to have the buy in $40 min and $100 max in order to attract the fish, er I mean non poker players.
But I am also thinking the real players would prefer to have a larger max buy in.
If I put the max at $160 do you think that will scare the "fun players"?
My thoughts are, $160 is less daunting than $200.

  • I might go to $150 as a nice, exact mid-point, and lower the minimum to $30.00. That way the "fun" players will look at busting out as the equivalent of a night at the movies, or the cost of an evenings baby-sitting (i.e. no big deal). But, I honestly think that leaving the max. at $100.00 would not discourage a "good" player, as they would expect to increase their stack fairly easily anyway. I am certainly NOT the best player on this Forum but even I look at these sorts of events as a fishing expedition. Once the decent players notice each other's thongs, everything should sort itself out nicely over a couple of secret handshakes.:D

The reason I said $40 and $160 is that I like to keep the amounts in denominations of $20s for speed and ease of buying in. Everyone has a stack of 20s on them but not so many 10s and 50s.

I realized that 100 max will not discourage the good players since they will play at this game no matter what, but they may prefer a larger buy in, in case of the bad beats and need to rebuy.

    Thongs. Thats funny yo. :)
  • Okay, I take your point re: $20.00's. End result? Min = 40, max = 100. And don't forget to smile when you rake in the chips.
  • I was at a similar type of event this weekend. After busting out of the tourney, I joined the 1-2 NL cash game, which had a $40 max buy in. Normally, I never would have played, but having watched the table play for about 20 mins before I sat down was all the encouragement I needed to play. Bought in for $40, cashed out $240 about an hour and a half later. I didn't even have to bate my hook when I threw my line in the water! Too bad I wasn't feeling well or I could have stayed there all night.
