new member post: more raw than sushi

Hi, people. I got Roy West's _7-Card Stud_ at a garage sale two months ago and it really fired me up to play. After doing some googling and watching play on a few websites without signing up, I decided to sign up at Ladbrokes. (I know that sounds weird but all the poker sites with lots of 7-stud players are on some Godforsaken island where Wyatt Earp is still sheriff. I don't like that.) Yesterday I put in $45 with my prepaid M/C and have been playing some Hold 'Em tournaments. (I don't play "ring" because I can't afford to start off with a lot of money in my account and don't want to make 18 cents an hour for the next three years playing poker full-time.)

If anybody's got some advice for me I'm happy to hear from you. Or if you just wanna say "f*** off you loser" that's okay too. When I see if people want to talk to me I'll start reading and posting on the rest of this site.

  • Hi there and welcome to the forum.

Roy West's book is a good one to start out with.
If you're interested in 7 card stud, I highly recommend, "Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players" after you read the Roy West book.

If you're new to poker I'd highly recommend that you play at the lowest level/buyin the site has to offer....

Crush it. and then move up.

Get a rakeback deal. (note: conflict of interest here since I am an affiliate for the major sites)

Rakeback will earn you about 1.5 big blinds per 100 hands which at low levels might be more than your win rate.
  • Thanks for answering, ReefAquarium.

I don't want to read another 7-Card Stud book right now because I can't find any place to play it that I trust, and it's making me frustrated enough that I read West's book and can't play.

Is rakeback when they give you back part of your rake? Even at 1.5 big bets that would be like 60 cents an hour at the money I can afford to risk. (I'm up to $91 now after finishing 2nd in a couple of tourneys.)

Oh, I said I would wait to see if people wanted to talk before posting, but I'm in the Lunch Hour Crapshoot on Ladbrokes in half an hour. It cost a lot of money to enter, $33, but it's $2,750 guaranteed and there are only 13 people in it so far with top 3 winning and 3rd prize over $500. I'm not the best at math but that sounds like a good risk after I just finished 2nd in a $11 tournament and won about $65. Anyway, if people want to come and watch and chat while I play and maybe be my fans please come. I'm relapcchio on Ladbrokes.

  • Never mind :( When it started there were 95 players. The money was still $2,750 with 8 winners which means $330 per winner, and I paid $33 so that's 10 times the money, but with 8 winners and 95 players that's a 1 in 12 chance to win, and 1 in 12 times ten is less than 1. I don't know if that's the way real poker players think about it but that's how I think about it. I lost money just by staying for the start of the tournament the way you lose money when you buy a lottery ticket or sit down to play blackjack. Back when there was only 13 players and top 3 won that was a 1 in 4 chance to win which looked really good, but I didn't quit the tournament before they wouldn't let me any more. So I got mad at myself and did some stupid bets and got knocked out in 88th place by some woman named crazylashes, who probably gets off on hurting guys like Annie Duke does. Oh well. Still got $60 or so to play cheaper tournaments with and I learned something new.

  • Hey Pogro, welcome to the site! When playing MTT (multi-table tournaments) I think one of the most important things is to have lots of patience. Let all the bad players knock themselves out early, wait for very strong hands and raise big when you get them. Avoid playing too many pots early, and try to adapt a tight-agressive playing style at the beginning. As the tournament goes on, loosen up and start playing more pots and taking more risks.

    Good luck at the tables!
  • Thanks, sloth. That's the way I played when I finished 2nd in that other tourney but the math made me mad and I played stupid in the expensive one.

  • The problem with the big MTT is to do well you will eventually have to suck out on some hands at least a few times so there is an element of luck (unless you can build up your stack quickly early so you can afford these risks). Patience is definitely the key though, as when you get bored and want to play more hands then you do irrational things and will probably lose. Find something to keep you entertained while playing. The best tournament I ever played I read an e-book on tournament strategy while playing. Finshed 1st in a 22$ buyin with $1750 guaranteed. Reading kept me relaxed and entertained, so when I got the good hands I could really focus on them. Some people will play multiple tournaments, but I find this a little difficult as I like to analyze the players at my table (though sometimes doing this can have negative affects).

    Good luck!

Inconceivable! Unlucky of you to run into a woman like that!

    Welcome to the forum.
  • got knocked out in 88th place by some woman

Good thing that would never happen around here. Our women are too busy cooking and cleaning and having our kids.
  • Sloth: Thanks for the advice. I'm building up my mental stamina.

Buzzard: I like the way you sophistically chopped off the "who gets off on hurting guys" in order to dishonestly imply that I had a problem with being beaten by even a good-hearted woman. And I really like you dogmatically resorting to this tired old "woman in the kitchen" cliche when we all know that, today, Canada exists for the benefit only of women and Canadian human males are second-class citizens. Feminist dogma forbids us to *say* it but we all *know* it.

Poker players are poker players whether they're male, female, hermaphrodites, eunuchs, transgendered, or whatever. I don't care about the mere fact that she's female. I care about a person, man or woman, being nasty, cruel, heartless, and malicious the way Duke is and her admirers aspire to be.

  • Man you're weird...
  • hold me back someone, hold me back...oh no he di-int!

actually I started to tear you a new one, but I erased because this isn't funny to me. Fck your bullshit ideas, you haven't the slightest idea of what you are talking about.

I'd stick to poker chat if I were you, you'll benefit immensely from this forum.

    Best of luck.
  • I think I've read enough to come to a conclusion about your potential use to me.
