Running bad

So I am; and I vaguely remember some epic threads on the subject..but since I was running good at the time I didn't pay much attention to the content therein. :D

'Search' was unproductive (I even ran bad there!) Does anyone remember who started it or have the link?

Also, any tidbits? I took a break and came back to continue running gross. I'm not making poor decisions and still getting my money in good. I tried moving from large #entrant MTT's to 5 tables, but now I'm just feeling apathetic about the money to be won, and poker has gone from fun, challenging and exciting to a boring, special olympics befriending, grind.

  • i feel your pain kristy. can i give you a hug???:)

went thru the same thing last week, patience is a virtue, just be patient and make the tough folds and you will bounce back, the last 2 or 3 days have been back to good for me after a 0 for 14 slump the last week.
  • I know how you feel. Last week, it happened to me 4 times in 2 days that someone would hit a 3-outter to either eliminate me or cripple me. (ex: all-in pre-flop, AK vs. AQ and villaing flops the Q) I asked a fellow player, "That's 4 times in 2 days?! What are the odds of that?!" and he said, "7% every time." True - gotta look at the big picture.

If you're getting your money in good, what else can you do? My only questions is "how good?" 52-48? 60-40? That's the only thing I would look at. If all else fails, remember this quote which should make you feel a little better:

"If you are an excellent player, people are going to draw out on you alot more than you're going to draw out on them because they're simply going to have the worst hand against you a lot more times that you have the worst hand against them. There's no way you're going to draw out on anybody if you don't get all your money in there with the worst hand." - Bobby Baldwin

It may not be much consolation... but if others are sucking out... it simply means you're the better player. ;)
  • variance in donkaments is sick... i have gone 60 tourneys in a row without cashing before... take time off, drop down in stakes, play less tables and really focus on your game. If you are constantly thinking about how bad you are running, it is probably affecting your play no matter what you think. Consistently getting your money in good doesnt always mean you are playing well... you may be playing too tight and not picking up chips in earlier spots that would allow you to take a hit and still be alive in the tourney. If the only times you are getting it in bad are coolers you are probably doing something wrong.
  • Very early in my obsession, I read Poker and the Art of Zen (sic). Still have it. So every once in a while, when variance decides to bite me in the ass, I skim my way through it. Usually helps to settle down my nerves, and keep me focused on making good decisions at the table. It's tough to trust that all you have to do is keep making sound judgements and things will go your way, but there it is. As long as the rest of your poker universe is in order, you WILL ride this out with minimal losses. And, when the turnaround comes, reread The Art of War and place your heel firmly on their throats. I'll invoice you later.
  • Great info, thanks guys!

A couple of you have had tough 'week's..I'm on week 5 now of breaking even: me= :fish:, thank goodness casino players = :fish:* :fish: to the power of :fish:

Edit: I don't think that I'm playing too tight, just really, really running bad...but I think _obv_'s point is an excellent one.

Milo you nailed it perfectly with:
It's tough to trust that all you have to do is keep making sound judgements and things will go your way, but there it is.

  • I posted earlier about how I was running badly.

I was running super hot for a while then I was going through a 180 big bet downswing at limit poker.
    Here's what I did.

    1. I started posting hands so I could get other peoples advice about how I was playing. I find that often I am, "Too close to the action" to self evaluate and having, "Another pair of eyes" look at the hands helps.

    2. I re-read my books. esp. Hold'em poker for advanced players; Small stakes hold'em; Middle limit hold'em ; How good it your limit hold'em.

    3. I took time to examine the hands in poker tracker.

    4. I did a bunch of physical exercise worked on eating properly and getting lots of sleep.

    5. I read a bunch of strategy forums and posted a hand a day.

    6. I watched a bunch of video's

    7. I watched a bunch of dvd's.

    8. I talked with my poker playing friends.

    9. I posted on this forum.

    10. I moved down in stakes.

11............. I said, "Frig it" and switched from limit to no limit LOL.

It seemed to work.. I'm running super hot.
  • I'd post hands but they'd all look like this:

  • See my post in BBV for the quick response possibilities. Might not help your streak, but could make you giggle.
  • Those are sick hands Kristy. I almost lost my breakfast seeing those. Shake it off... you're getting your money in good. When you make the correct decisions (which you seem to be doing), over the long run, you win.

  • Variance can be pretty sick. I have read somewhere that it would be possible to run below expectation in 1000 MTT's.

Plow throught it Kristy and good luck!
  • Wow that's really brutal chuckie!
  • I often struggle with this. With the number of hands I play, I'll run into a bad run of cards at least once a month. As I mentioned in another post, only the length and severity of the bad run varies.

What I ask myself is "am I the best poker player I can be?" and "would a much better player experience the same results?" The answer is always no, and no.

Then the big question, "am I willing to change the way I play?" Oddly enough, sometimes the answer is no. I'm just not willing to change how I play.

When I'm willing to change, I find a spot to get some new ideas (forum, book, video, post hands etc.) and then move down in limits and test those ideas out. Then, when I feel more confident (bad run fixed or not), I go back to my old game and more often than not, my results get supercharged. I posted a couple of hands recently, which bugged me. I felt I made the right play, but the play was a symptom of another problem which was creeping into my game -- my agression wasn't there on the river and I was missing huge value bet opportunities (the one hand we played when we both made trip aces and I had you outkicked comes to mind)

If I'm not willing to change, well I just move down in limits and try different games -- stud, pot limit omaha etc. This is by far the most difficult approach, but sometimes, it's all you can do. You can't force things your way -- the cards do what they do.

    Cheers
    Magi
  • Ooops and forgot my all time favourite for when you take a couple of bad beats in a row. Go down to .02/.04 and buy in max. Play the wildest crazy game you can play. Right now, I think I'm -400 bb/100 (-40 bucks) at this limit, but it sure is fun.

Also, this is the limit I play when I play drunk. More fun, less worries.

    Cheers

  • I open a $1.20 Sit-N-Go and open shove every hand til I bust.

This is great medicine for the soul and the reaction on the table is worth the price of admission.

    Once I got 3rd place. :)

I find it strange that somone that tight would call even from the SB and then you go onto thinking he has a 2. How do you put someone that tight on a 2...maybe 22 but a single 2?

What made you put him on a 2?
