nl question

so i'm playing at the local stable a few days ago. 1/2 nl and most players have 100 or so in front of them but some have as much as 800. the table is very loose and semi-aggressive.

an old guy - let's call him 'gordie the pirate' is in the big blind. he loves suited connectors, small pairs, any ace, all that crap and doesn't care much about position. a loose, straightforward player limps UTG, a couple of others limp and a tight-aggressive player makes it $25 from LP. folded around but gordie the pirate can't fold as he's already got 2 bucks in there. UTG limper pushes for about $60. LP raiser re-pushes for $150. gordie the pirate quickly calls for a bit less and turns over KJs.

so here's my question: what day of the month do the old-age supplement cheques arrive? i'm just trying to figure out the chances he'll be there tonight...

  • They arrive the last ful week of the month.

Maybe the pirate has an RRSP he's dipping into. :D

PS Please don't tell me the pirate won?
  • Course he won Hobbes. Flop came K, K, J. Thats why the pirate comes back. That occasional bit of positive reinforcement that says, "forget about the $200.00 you drop most nights. You're leaving +$50.00 tonight. You're a WINNER, sport." >:D
  • It's all about positive reinforcement for terrible play! Keeps the fishies around!

    i couldn't agree more!
  • And here I was expecting some great NL connundrum and your question isn't really a question.

At all limits all players view the value of money differently. It doesn't matter if it's your last dollar or your million'th dollar.

Everytime I'm at the Casino and I've had a couple of bad hands, I wander off to the higher limit tables and watch people happily dump 10X my buy-in and bitch and complain how the dealer is killing them. I try an understand why they do the things they do. It's a really interesting excercise and helps when I go back to the tables.

It also makes me happy because I know there will always be players at the table who treat poker like they do the table games and/or the slot machines. Nothing wrong with that approach -- the players know they will lose, but they want entertainment along the way. And, the thrill they get by hitting the long shot ($10 midnight, $25 yo_) is well worth the negative odds.

It sucks when you're the casino and paying off the $10 midnight, but hehehe, you only paid 30 to 1 on a 36 to 1.

    Cheers

  • Forget Poker....

the first weekend of the month is killer for bingo overlay!

Mmmmm money from people who are forced to eat Catfood caserole...mmmmmmm
  • Ever since the pet food scare last year(?), I would think they have switched to something else. Or at least gone to dry food.
  • ya, it was just a joke on how bad live players can be. there were numerous examples i could add from this week but can't see the point.
