It is a four page summary so scroll down for all the details. I will likely attend if my backroll can recover from this weekend 20k in chips for the main event as well, although the blind levels are cut to 20 minutes. I guess this will be competition for the Sarnia tournaments but these are much better structure. I have added this tournament to my tournament listing at : http://www.pokerforum.ca/showthread.php?t=14422
I'll probably end up going anyway. I've only ever lost in tournaments at Turning Stone, why stop now.
March I assume?
Event 1: March 4, U$200+30, 20,000 chips, 20-minute rounds. Patience Factor = 19.3, Casino fee/rake (including 3% staff gratuity) = 15.7%.
Event 2: March 5, U$200+30, 5000 chips, 40-minute rounds. P.F. = 18.5, total rake = 15.7%.
Event 3: March 6, U$200+30, 5000 chips, 40-minute rounds, 6 maximum/table. P.F. = 18.5, rake = 15.7%.
Event 4: March 7, U$300+40, 5000 chips, 40-minute rounds. P.F. = 18.5, rake = 14.4%.
Event 5: March 8, U$500+50, 5000 chips, 40-minute rounds. P.F. = 18.5, rake = 11.8%.
Event 6: March 9, U$200+30, 20,000 chips, 20-minute rounds. P.F. = 19.3, rake = 14.4%.
Surprisingly, the 5K-chip 40-minute events offer the same amount of poker play as the 20K-chip 20-minute events. This shows the usefulness of knowing how to calculate a tournament's Patience Factor.
Should I stay or should I go?
It is a four hour drive for me, so I am estimating that it would cost around $150 for gas round-trip. A hotel would cost ~U$100/night, plus at least U$25/day for meals & other expenses. So if I were to stay there for 6 nights to play in 5 of the events, it would cost me a total of ~$2500. The $EV for an average player for the 5 events is $1,358. Very few players in the world are good enough to have twice the average $EV. I think I will save my $2500 for other poker events, e.g., Casino Brantford's best-value satellites & tournaments from March-May.
all_aces makes a very good point that with the relatively small buy-ins, a huge proportion of the cost for Canadians will be travel-related instead of a +EV shot at the small prize pool. Good luck to those who are going.
