Is anyone hiring poker dealers in Canada?

I am looking for a poker dealing job in Montreal, or Ontario. I found this site and thought it would make more sense to ask here than begin calling casinos in Ontario. I read the two recent threads on poker dealing. It's kind of discouraging for me if Montreal and Ontario are my first choices.

I haven't learned to deal anything other than all forms of poker (Real poker). I've seen, and played enough blackjack to be able to pick it up. I mention this because someone said Canadian casinos are likely to hire people with knowledge in other games.

Is this Brantford Casino still hiring? What about Calgary? The last time I heard, the Montreal Casino was finally going to bring in poker, but their website makes no mention. Any other insights would be appreciated.

Last week a dealer said Brantford is hiring.

Actually, it makes a lot more sense to try to contact the casinos directly as they would know more than a forum member. Please post if you are able to get a response from the Human Resources department of the casinos.

I know a lot of qualified multi-game dealers that keep hoping just to get a job interview at any Ontario casino, but never do. If there is ever an opening in an Ontario casino, I would expect that the minimum requirements would be six months experience in dealing three or more different games, including blackjack. A couple of my dealer friends gave up on Ontario and moved to Alberta or will move to New Brunswick.

I was told that the Montreal Casino could not reach an agreement with their spoiled unionized dealers, & it will be using PokerTek "Poker Pro" electronic poker tables instead of dealers. :'(
  • Ontario is looking pretty dismal so I already began trying Alberta. I called two places in Calgary and they both said they were hiring poker dealers. I will probably go there next month.

Yes, next month the Montreal Casino should have the computerized poker. The operator didn't make any mention that live dealers would be brought in at a later time which is what another operator told me several months ago. Never heard about the unionizing and so on.

That's Quebeckers for ya. The entire province has been spoiled by the rest of Canada forever. It has become core to their nature. You should see all the deadwood french government workers everywhere here in Ottawa. I've been dreading this. I was really looking forward to some real poker here in the Nat Cap...but leave it to Quebec to fuck it up. I bet the rake will be high too.

Oh well, OLGC 1000 Islands will be happy to hear this.
  • In case anybody is interested in dealing instead of playing at the WSOP, see http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/dealer_info.asp. The base rate is a whopping $6.41/hour in American pesos!

  • I remember a discussion on one of the forums, 2+2 maybe? that the dealers in the main event received around $12. an hour in total, including the amount withheld from the prize pool, hardly what I would call a good living.... The grass is always greener.....
  • Casino Rama just posted an opening for a part-time table game dealer. Surprisingly, only blackjack is listed as a requirement instead of the usual 3+ different games.
  • Was at Brantford last night and at the dealers meeting I heard rumblings about how many dealers were into Overtime every shift and how they were getting tired of it.

I got the impression that the floor seemed to know that more hiring was coming. So it wouldn't hurt to get your resume in there, if you have the qualifications.
  • There is a load of work for dealers in Alberta, I can attest to that. We have a shortage of workers out here for everything. From what I was told by one of the dealer trainers I worked with (Century Casino in Edmonton) she had a constant class of trainees every couple of weeks before she transferred to our casino to train dealers for the Grand opening.

There are 6 casinos in Edmonton and a few in Calgary and other truck stops and oil communities around here. The hardest thing will be committing to make a move.

    Dan's 2 cents
  • Hmm that is worth considering, I would love to deal cards for a living. I wonder how much $$$ you need to save up to move out there?
  • does sound interesting, i know everyone pays big bucks to find help out there right now.
