Decent tournaments in January

  • Card rooms don't like mentioning the dirty 4-letter word "rake" so educated poker players have to find out for themselves. I showed the updated rake calculations in a later post (i.e., $24/$120 = 20% rake), but here is a more detailed explanation. Assuming there are 100 players who choose to play the fast :( tournament on Wednesday, then they will be paying a total of $12,000 ($120 * 100). $2,000 ($20 * 100) of that will be kept by the casino for expenses and profit. An additional 4% of the players' prize pool or $400 (4% * 10K) is withheld for tournament staff. So a total of $2,400 or 20% rake/fee (2400/12,000) is taken out of the players' total buy-ins of $12K.

With 1/5 of the players' buy-ins taken out of the prize pool, it becomes more difficult for even above average tournament players to make money. Ideally, you want to maximize the value or utility from your limited poker bankroll, i.e., play in another tournament with a lower rake or at least gives you more poker play for your money. For example, I played in a cheaper tournament on Saturday that had a lower rake, free food and had a much better Skill Level.

What is the room rate at the Days Inn in Canada?

maybe the Thursday noon as I like the format and even with the low stats, for $100 it might be fun.
I agree that that the $120 Thursday tournament is better than Wednesday if you like getting more poker play for the same amount of money. I wanted to play in the shoot-out, but a WSOP league is starting that night which I don't want to risk missing. The shoot-out finals has 5,000 starting chips and a Skill Level of 3.

pokerJAH, if you decide to play on Thursday and want to discuss optimal strategy, give me a call. Which motel are you planning to go to if you end up staying overnight?

hopefully Friday and if all goes well, will stick around for Saturday.
  • I plan to leave from Oakville before 9:30 AM, taking the QEW Niagara. I hope to stay overnight for Day 2, but in the event that I bust out early, I will probably want to drive back by 5:30 PM.

  • Anyone play in the shootouts before? I wonder if they let you play in the 1pm again if you bust out of the 10am tournament.

Are there generally a lot of players at the main event? Or does it go to Day 2 because of the slower blind structure? From what I've seen, there isn't a lot of players at these tournaments.
  • I'm pondering the main event now.... lots more play but pretty $$$.

btw, Days Inn has increased its rate to $49 this morning per their website.
  • Main event -

I will be heading down Saturday Morning, and will probably get a room at the Days inn depending on how it goes.

Is there anyone going from KW for Saturday?

  • heading down on Thursday night for some live action; will be playing in the Friday $300 event and if I get lucky, the main event. I will be wearing a Richmond Hill Raider's Soccer Club cap if you want to say hi. Likely be playing at the $1/$2 ($200 max) table Thursday night.

Buddy, what time does the traffic ease up on the QEW through Oakville?

The times I went, it seemed that the QEW Niagara would be very busy between 4-5 PM, and the drive to Seneca would take two hours. So my friend & I would try to leave early from Oakville by 3 PM. The drive may also be faster after 6 PM. If you want free food, the poker room serves dinner at 6 PM this week. The pizza arrived in the middle of my first $115 satellite, so thanks to the forumer who saved me some pizza.

In case anybody is interested, one of the satellite winners is willing to sell his U$1,070 seat for U$900. I would have bought it had I not won my satellite. :) I plan to stay at Howard Johnson across from Denny's for U$52/room on Saturday night.

I might be interested. Will he be at the casino tonight or tomorrow?

I ended up paying $62 for another hotel in town that has decent breakfast and good water pressure. I really hate those pissy showers. Worth the extra money, easy!

  • I'm heading there tomorrow morning, playing the $300 event, staying in a room at the hotel, and playing the 1K event on Saturday.

I will probably bust out of the 1K event as an 86% favourite or so. Why do I bother.

    GL all!

when I take you out tomorrow, I will say hi :) good luck in any case. Hopefully they get at least 50 players.
  • If I can wake up on time from my poker game tonight, I will be having breakfast at Seneca by 11 AM on Saturday. The buffet restaurant is near the poker room and you can use your points from your player's card. Good luck to all the forumers playing this week.
  • Good luck.
