Planning a B&M night or two - When and where?

I will have a week without wife/kids in January, and I'd like to hit up a poker room in southern Ontario somewhere.

I have only played limit live, but I am playing NL online. I'm going to take a crack at live 1/2NL wherever I end up.

My choices are between Rama, Niagara/Fallsview, Brantford, Seneca, or anywhere in that region. I heard there might be a room in Windsor, is this true?

So, I'm looking for the best games, of course. I have only been to Seneca and Rama. I was thinking that Niagara/Fallsview would be the most tourist-filled games, but I also see a lot of buses heading to Rama on the 400.

Also, if anyone has played at any of these rooms, what type of game can I expect? Lots of bluffing? Passive? A mix of everything?

I'm also wondering when the best time to go is. I imagine that going on a Friday/Saturday night at dinnertime or so would be best.

Any thoughts?

(edit: wrong forum, should be in B&M talk, apologies)

  • For 1/2 nl live, I think it's a safe assumption that wherever you go the the table will be populated by over 50% newbies, donks, loose passive's and maniac's. Basically easy money or bad beat central.

Windsor rakes $7 per half hour from 2/5 which is a bit much, I imagine 1/2 is the same.

If you're going to Fallsview/Niagara on a Fri/Sat, get there in the afternoon.
  • If you wanna eventually play 1/2 NL, Rama is best. The Niagara/FV 1/2 NL are $100 max, preflop push poker. Seneca takes $3 on the flop, too much IMO. Not only is Rama $200 max but it has a better rake than the others.

Weekend dinner is prime but the wait is very long. You may end up blowing your $ at other games waiting. Afternoon or after midnight is better for wait, but not as fishy.
  • Brantford is LIMIT only so take that into account before you come here :)
  • I would pick Casino Rama as the best casino to play $1/2 and $2/5 NL. The rake is 10%, $5 maximum and $2 on the flop, which is better for most players than the session fees at Fallsview Casino. The maximum buy-in for 1/2 is $200, unlike only $100 at the Niagara casinos.

The big disadvantage of Rama is that they won't let you phone ahead and you may have to wait for hours. For those who are too far from Rama like me, Seneca Casino Niagara is the choice. The wait lists are much shorter than at Rama and Fallsview. The rake is worse ($3 on any flop, $1 bad beat jackpot if the pot is at least $10, plus an extra $1 if the pot is at least $40) than Rama/Niagara, but is still better than a session fee. There are $200 max. tables available.

Unbranded alcohol is free at Seneca unlike Ontario casinos where you even have to pay for hot chocolate or chocolate milk. As I found out the hard way, you still have to pay for branded drinks at Seneca, such as Red Bull and Labatt's beer.

If you plan to go to Niagara/Fallsview, phone in ahead to get your name on the list and then check in with the pit when you get there. It will cut short your waiting time but a bit.
  • I only live about 30-35 minutes from Rama anyway, and it sounds like a good choice. I was mostly concerned about Rama since it's not as much of a tourist area and I figured there would be a higher % of regulars there.
  • I have said it before but I will say it again, there is more dead money in Fallsview's poker room than Seneca, Brantford and Rama combined.

Blondefish is playing poker and drinking, look out. Never thought I would see the day when Buddy has a beer at the poker table :)

btw, 4 posts in three years?
  • PokerJAH: Yeah, I joined up a while ago when I was first into poker. I know BBC_Z, he and I were in a group that went to AC.

I took a hiatus from poker for a couple years when my first child was on the way. I've recently got back to playing online, and I've made the switch from playing limit to NL.

What a bad guy to be connected to. :D
I was at Rama a couple of weekends ago, and it seems like they have been drawing more casual players, not necessarily tourists, but the players who don't normally play and comes up for say a concert and decides to come ahead/stay behind and play. Not saying thats not the case for Fallsview, but there appears to have been an influx of 'em. I am not a regular so I cannot comment whether or not thats the norm.
