After AK misses

Scenario
NLH Tournament
Your in late position with average stack mp limps (also average stack) you raise to 4-5xbb with AcKd. Mp position calls. Heads up for the flop.
8c-4d-Qh. MP checks.....what do you do?

Same scenario but flop brings....
4d-Jc-Qc and your first to act....what do you do?

One more time guys, flop brings...
10h-10c-Qh and you are last to act...what do you do?

The player you are against ususally plays premium hands and is aggresive

  • Hand 1: I bet pot here and fold to a reraise.

    Hand 2: Check fold.

Hand 3: Same as hand 1.

There are many ffactors that could change my decisions such payout structure, blinds compared to my stack, my feel of the table, etc.

    Hope this helps.

  • 1. Made a standard sized bet. Shut down if your opponent puts any more money into the pot. Q84 rainbow is likely enough to have missed your opponent.

    2. Check. I'd love to see that turn card.

    3. Check and shut down immediately. If a Jack comes off on the turn, I don't even especially like it.

  • 1. Bet about 3/4 pot
    2. Bet about 3/4 pot
    3. Check

Scotty: In question 2, you're first to act, but your statement of
Check. I'd love to see that turn card.
sounds to me like you're acting last. Maybe not... just wondering if you missed the 'first to act' part.

  • Oops. I missed that.

    2. Check with the intention of folding. I'd love to see that turn card.

In question 2 you say that you would bet about 3/4 pot. What if your opponent just calls that bet, Do you check the turn if it brings no help?
  • I think if you opponent calls 3/4 on the flop, with no draws, he/she will call to the river. Best to check and if he/she bets on the turn and river, it would be appropriate to fold.
  • Even though my flop plays depend upon the players, to an extent, I was able to generalize my decisions enough to be able to answer the questions based on most tight-aggressive players.

However, as for question 2, if he flat calls and the turn brings no help, what I would do after that would be entirely dependant on my experiences with the player in question in the tournament so far, as well as on our exact stack sizes. I might check and fold to a bet, I might bet 1.5 times the amount I did on the flop, or I might push all of my chips into the middle. In NL hold'em, a lot of the answers to hypothetical questions are 'it depends', but that doesn't make them not worth asking, and I think these are all good questions.

So, what would I do against a typical solid player, with both of us on average stacks? Check, and fold to a bet, I think.

It looks to me like he has a small/medium pair. Bet 3/4 of pot and shut down it called.

4d-Jc-Qc and your first to act....what do you do?
I will give him a wider range of hands because I am assuming that he has flat called my 4x BB raise pre-flop. He has an "implied odds" hand. I like me hand here. Bet 3/4 of pot.

Bet 3/4 of the pot. I still have to put him on a small/meduim pair.
  • Thanks guys, lots of help. I have one more question.

What about sitting at a loose/aggresive cash NLH table. When its very hard to put certain apponents on a hand do you usually still take a crack at the pot after the flop?

Lets assume I am an aggresive player that usually only plays premium hands and I hold AKo against a fairly good player and the flop comes 2h-6d-9s. Being the first to act I come out betting, should'nt my opponent have a fairly good idea that I am holding AK,AQ etc. or am I trying to represent a high pocket pair?
    Thanks

  • Ummmm...

Why is betting 3/4 pot the new black?

    ScottyZ
  • Good question Scotty, I find myself betting 3/4 of the pot all the time, and I don't know when/why I started doing this. I like it though.
