Advice about playing at High School Reunion

This may be a silly thread/question, but I'm throwing it out there anyways, because I'm really at odds trying to figure how I want to play/appear. I've got my old high school reunion coming up and I hear they're going to have poker tables there. I'm not sure what the blinds will be, but I'm assuming 1/2 or 2/4. Just curious as how much I should buy-in when I sit down.

Should I be looking to by the maximum and then sticking out to every other player there so that they see I'm serious about playing and they may want to gun for me? Or do I keep it friendly and only buy-in for what everyone else is buying-in for? Yes, I want to play well and walk out a winner when I head over there, but I'm unsure as to whether I should intimidate the table with a large/maximum chip stack out of the gate. From previous years, people are only buying in on an average of $40. I think it was 1/2 that year.

I know you have to play to win and I don't need to be convinced of that. Just wondering if I'd be violating some sort of ettiquette if I buy in the maximum while others are playing the minimum at a high school reunion?

Thanks in advance!

  • Were you popular in high school? If so, play nice and win graciously.

If not, eff'em. Run the table over and give it to everybody PRISON STYLE!
  • well i'd say first look at the table and see what other's are buying in with and then you can guage if the players at your table are playing strictly for fun or looking to play some serious poker. I'd say buy in for the max and try to be a winner. Theres no rule against winning and being social. That way either way its a win/win goodluck!

At the table win all their money.

After that you can help them cut their lawn or something ... but at the table win the maximum.

    Buy in for max.
Playing a short stack properly means playing very tight preflop. It isn't as much fun as buying in max....

Even as a poker player, if i saw someone doing this @ a reunion, or something like a stag party where it's really intended to be fun/social, I think i might laugh. I'd assume most of the people you'd be playing with @ this sort of thing wouldn't even know what they should be intimidated by.
  • you could buy in for the maximum that the other players have bought in for. So if one player decides to buy in for $100, then set that as your maximum. Once you have played for a little while, gradually add to your stack so its not so obvious that you are building a big stack. Also watch your pot/implied odds as there is no point trying to hit your trips when the player only has $25 in chips behind and it cost you $10 to call.

Hehe. Nothing like having the quarterback of the football team who used to shove you in lockers pushing you a huge pot, which you know cost him the majority of his paycheck from his dead-end job.

Revenge is a dish best served by Quad 2's on the river.

The guy wants to play poker at his reunion rather than actually talk to anyone (or bang some of that "what could have been" tail), so I think the answer is self-evident..

    Anyway, bleed those jocks dry.

  • I'd drop a brick on the table and say what only $100 max?
