ended up going to Club 138 Poker Room just over the Mercier bridge on Saturday night. Apparently it is only 20 minutes from downtown Montreal and is the only 'legal' place to play poker in Montreal as it is on an indian reserve. Took us about an hour to find the place as their are not many signs to the reserve. Talk about cheap cigarettes, $20/carton on the reserve and there are about 20 stores selling smokes on the main drag. The club had two 1/2 tables going when we go there and we were able to squeeze into table one until a third table started. Place was ok but it is the only club I have been to with security sitting by the door which is good and bad I guess. I was up and down for most of the night when I hit a straight to the king on the flop (KQ). One other player comes out with a raise of $11 so I pop it to $30. He calls and the turn brings another jack. He bets out for $25 and I go all-in for another $80. He ponders so I know he doesn't have the full house and eventually calls with trip jacks. The river is a blank and I double up. There are a lot of players buying in for $40 at a time and a lot of calling stations. Guy to my right must have bought in for $40 about five times and was playing almost every hand, even with $15 raises. Pretty weak play overall. One big hand I got involved in near the end was when I represented a flush and raised on the river to $55 with about $100 in the pot. With two overcards and a flush on board, this guy calls me with middle pair. Very impressive call considering the board. I leave up $150 and my friend who has never played at a poker club before ends up $160 so overall a good night for the both of us. I may try this rosemont club tonight in downtown Montreal.
there seem to be a couple clubs in the Montreal area; neither have returned my emails or phone calls. Not sure if it is a french/english thing as one club has a french only website. Both sites are active and have been updated daily so obviously they are still running. My advice right now is to play at Club 138 as it is 'legal', although there are only tournaments on certain nights and cash games on the other nights.
There is a room where cash games and S&G are played. There is also larger room where multi table tournaments are played. The tournaments usually has anywhere from 50 to 100 entrants. There is a 10% prize structure and I believe the blinds are increased every 20 or 30 minutes. French and English are spoken at the tournaments. This is the schedule.
Sunday – 2:30pm – $40 buy in – 5000 chips
Sunday – 8:30pm – $60 buy in – 6000 chips
Monday – 8:30pm – $40 buy in – 5000 chips
Tuesday – 8:30pm – $60 buy in – 6000 chips
