Opinion: Bad poker players or players you feel hurt the game

I know who is on my list. Who is on yours?

Criteria: Any player who has limited actual skill at the game of poker and has achieved status strictly based on a lucky session OR any player who personality, look, attitude etc. hurts the game as a whole (non-players perception of it)

My list currently is (in no particular order)

Jamie Gold
Jimmy Fricke
Hevad Khan (though his multi-tabling was impressive)
Jennifer Tilly
will add more as I think of them.

  • Jimmy Fricke is young, a freak, and a really weird dude.

    Howard ? ? ? ? Is that you?
  • LOL at Gobo hurts the game. Get a grip OP.
  • gobbo is a super nice guy, and hevad seems to be too, though he overdid it at wsop, but i think he realizes that now and has toned it down. Both are also legitimately good players. Gold and Tilly are obv pretty bad, but I don't see how tilly is bad for poker... Gold has done some pretty douchey things (lawsuit etc...) but even most of that seems to have blown over and he's not so bad anymore. Not really sure what you're idea of bad for poker is.
  • jamie gold...........

    total idiot this guy

I don't know why I feel the need to defend Jennifer Tilly, but every time this kind of discussion comes up I do. Clearly Jennifer is not a great poker player. I do think she is one of the better "celebrity" poker players out there. I also think she is not fooling herself and is interested in improving her game. Her biggest problem is that she is constantly put in situations where she is at a disadvantage and they are publicly aired. I wonder how well the average poker player would do at a table that included Phil Ivey and some of the other top players in the world? I definitely don't think that she is bad for the game.

P.S. I know that the standard rebuttal will be a reference to her checking the full house against Patrick Antonius or her ditzy image. I would remind people that she is an Oscar nominated, independently wealthy, seemingly nice woman. I wonder how many of us can claim the same level of success.
  • I don't think anyone makes poker look bad, on the otherhand there are several people who make themselves look like giant jackasses. There are some people who just take poker too seriously and need to take a few steps back. I say if you win, even if by doing some comepletely stupid, good for you, because you obviously were good enough to beat the other person. There are no 2 people who would play every hand the same way, it just amazes me that people care how other people play.
  • Jennifer Tilly can lay a bad beat on me any day.

Pretend she is an acup and attempt to make the same defence. :) jk I agree with what you wrote.

I also agree with what you wrote, and I would further that point by suggesting that it is possibly a bit of latent sexism that makes Tilly such a whipping-girl.

We preach table image over and over again, and then want to penalize Tilly for being one of the most effective 'ditz-i' (ditzs looks, wrong..how do you pluralise that word?)

Seriously, my short skirt #s went from 1 to 15 when I started playing poker, my use of slang from 0 to white trash/ conversation. You guys keep buying and we'll keep selling. An edge is an edge.

It is probably not fair to expect that the global poker community and the individual profit-seeking player can exist concurrently in a humanist 'greater good' sense. Presenting a united front of non-degeneracy to the rest of the world is something that I would actively seek where I can- but it feels unreasonable to lay into people like Tilly who are simply playing their strengths.

Trust me when I say that Jennifer's bra size does not influence my opinion of her. But if gains her an advantage at the table, I think she is smart to use it.

  • Pet peeve: vagina's.... haha, that sounds bad. It should be vaginas. No apostophe!

    /g2
  • Yeah, I know...we had a good laugh over the possessive vaginas

I have never met one that wasn't
  • yeah..renut.

    pet peeve: double negatives?
  • Who doesn't like bad players?
  • i love playing against bad players but hate watching them knowing you could be in that chair.
  • Is it me or does anyone else hate Tony G? I don't think he's that good. Not that I don't like loud mouths (I think Matusow is great) but he's not just a loud mouth. I find him ignorant as well. Can't remember what i was watching, I think it was a pokerstars tournament in England, but he made the worst call ever and needed runner runner perfect to win and did. Instead of just being happy he lucked out he started telling the other players(while standing and screaming) that he "knew" he was going to outdraw when he called. Bad poker and bad sportsmanship. I know that if given the chance to sit at a poker table with a pro that i would in a heartbeat (not saying i would win, would just love to play one) but if I saw Tony G at a casino I wouldn't want to sit down for fear that I would punch him out and be banned. Anyone else with me on this? :js :jd
  • "ditzes" is the plural of "ditz".
  • I am with you on that one pokrgod. I hate Tony G. too. In fact I hate him so much I will usually not watch a game on t.v. that he is in.

On the other hand that's exactly what he is trying to do... make everyone at the table hate him. They will then make more mistakes because they want to take him down.
  • Yeah I guess I have to agree on that one Awesome. A lot of players gun for him and lose because of it. Still would love to knock him out lol :js :jd

He jumped up and down like a spoiled brat kid berating the guy who had KK for calling his all in on the flop, when Tony G hit his runner runner perfect for the straight he said "I played it like a set! I played it like a set! Even I thought I had a set, how could you call that?" All the while dancing around the room like the asshole he is.

Rather than just take his suckout and go on with the game, he had to make it look like he played the hand brilliantly, when in fact he played it horribly and should have been knocked out of the tourny.
  • did he then shout "FUCK YEAH"?? ;)
