  • Ohh, this looks tasty. Timing is perfect and I am free that weekend. I am going to try and hit this for sure...

What cash games do they normally spread?

Also - where is the best hotels to stay at?
  • You can try to ask for Poker Rate. Otherwise there are motels within 15-20 mins drive from memory. As far as cash game goes, NL dominates. You will see some limit but I believe they spread up to 4/8, nothing between that and next one is 15/30.
  • there is a discounted rate for players in the tournament; the regular rate at the casino hotel starts at $129US so it may be better to just stay right there.
  • I just booked at the hotel for 80 bones a night. That's pretty decent - especially considering our dollar will be 1.10 by the end of the month. Ship It (US Americans)!!!!
  • I am playing in this tournament series... I will be heading there with my friend St. Martin and playing the $300, $500 and 1K events.

As for cash games, I usually play the $50/$100 LHE game when I'm there. They also have $30/$60 (or was it $20/$40) and $15/$30. As Wes mentioned, it is bizarre that they have nothing between $4/$8 and $15/$30 when it comes to LHE.

The hotel rooms at the casino are nice enough, and as you found out, cheap enough. The cash game room is huge and the tournaments are well-organized. If you don't like hanging around a poker room waiting for your seat in a cash game, they will call your hotel room and give you time to get down there to claim it. Between this and River Rock in a couple of weeks, I think I'm in for some great poker tournament action!

A reminder that it's a "dry" casino. Last time I was there you weren't even allowed to bring your own booze onto the premises (ie: the hotel), but the time before that it was fine. Here's how the conversation went this time when I was on the phone with the hotel lady:

Me: Are you guys still an alcohol-free casino?

    Her: Yes we are.

Me: So, you don't sell booze, or I'm not allowed to bring booze, or both?

Her: We definitely don't sell it.

    Me: Can I bring it?

Her: Umm... we have no official policy on that right now.

Me: So can I bring my own booze?

Her: We have no official policy. We're not going to tell you that you can, but we're not going to tell you that you can't.

Me: Great! So I'm allowed to bring it.

    Her: (...)

Sounds to me like Turning Stone is in the middle of some sort of licensing application, and they've instructed their staff to be as vague and non-committal about this as possible. An entertaining conversation to be sure, but I think the bottom line is that you can bring a few good old-fashioned Canadian beers onto the premises and they won't care. Mmm mmm good.

All pokerforum.ca members who are going should definitely get together for some drinks at their bar. Wait, that won't work. Well, we should get together for something, somewhere.
  • Yeah...there is certainly no policy re: bringing in your own alcohol. There has been numerous occasions when I've been there where the players are/have been drinking.
  • is the drive realistically five hours from the GTA (assuming no delay at the border)?
  • Depends how fast you drive too ;)

    120ish or 70mph
  • I'm there Thursday night -- playin the $500 on Friday and the main-event.

D, I am going to buy a motherload of booze at the border and my room will be well-stocked. When I was in the States last month, I could not believe how cheap the high-end scotch, rum and cognac was. I bought a bottle of Courvoisier VSOP and a big bottle of The Balvenie Doublewood for freakin' US$75!!!

In that case, we might have to have a pokerforum cash-game piss-up in my room.

I could also be convinced to host a satellite at my place in the next few weeks. I live on the east side of downtown Toronto, and if there's enough interest, I'll hold a rake-free sat ($100) and then cash game afterwards.
It won't be one of those trading percentages dealios, just a $100 SNG or a couple of them, and then cash game.
  • I'm in for the satellite; Blondefish will likely be all over this as well. Although the weekend of Nov 24th is bad for me.
  • Hmm - I was looking at the weekend of the 23-24 as probably the best date, but I could host a game on Friday November 16th.

Lets see if there are any other guys interested. Obviously getting 8 other guys to play winner-take-all sats could be tough. Cash games no problem...

    5-6 hours.
  • Google has it at 460kms from Ajax, 4 hours 44 minutes. Crossing at 1000 Islands.
  • i might go down there for the tourneys during the week but no so sure about the weekend.

if someone is hosting a satellite, i'm interested!

    Welcome back...
  • Okay, so we have a few interested guys in a satellite (3 so far). I can probably get a decent group out to my place, but I can't guarantee we'll play a winner-take-all satellite. Most will probably want to play a regular tournament (pay top 3), but I can accommodate up to 16 players. We can have a cash game afterwards.

If we can get enough guys to do the satellite, I'll host it. If not, I am still hoping to have a game that night, and fourm members are still welcome. Just let me know...
  • I'm playing in other tournaments during the Turning Stone event, but I'm interested in playing in the home game. I can probably make it on November 24 or 25, but not Friday nights.

Expect huge lines, crossing into the states... cross border traffic is up exponentally as the dollar soars... o/u for wait during peak times 1.5hrs

    Not the most accurate IMO.

That is realistic. I usually go via lewiston and take the NY thruway there. I know others who prefer 401 to Gan then south through watertown. They are both the same time but check to see the border crossing times before leaving.

Devin: I understand they have an alcohol license application in the works. That is why the non commitalness of it all. I know they won't allow BYO alcohol anymore.
