Mary Jane Controversy

This is going out to all you opinionated people/comic book lovers out there on the forum. I know you're out there.

Back in May (yeah so I'm a little late, but something just reminded me of this today...not sure why) there was quite a stir regarding a collectable statue of Mary Jane Watson from the Spidey Comics. I'll add pics but basically it shows a very buxom MJ, barefoot, hand washing a spidey costume, complete with peek-a-boo pink thong.

Ok so here's the thing...lots of feminist/female rights types have said how outraged they are, its sending woman back 40 years they've said, why isn't spidey doing his own laundry etc. I don't disagree, however I think many of these people are taking it a litte too far, setting woman back 40 years? come on now, there are worse things out there than this statue that could do damage to a woman's place in society (blind date? temptation island? pretty much any pornographic movie?)

My take on this statue is that it's just an art piece, part comic book art/part take on the classic pin up girls of the 40's and 50's, and nothing more. I'm just looking for your opinions about this...like I said...I'm neither for nor against what people have been saying, I'm just saying that everyone may need to lighten up a bit and just see this for what it is.

    Can't be...no piercings.
  • Sweeeeet!!!!!!!!
  • This has got to be a set up?

Compliments AND a thread for comic book lovers/opinionated people that deals with women's rights?

So my take on this: It depends on the marketing. If they have that at Zellers beside the kiddie Halloween costumes- I've got an issue with it. I would not want young fans being exposed to what is certainly a derogatory image.

If the purchaser is some geek (I say that lovingly) pushing 30-40 he may place that effigy the headboard of the waterbed in his parent's basement and use it to his *hearts* content.

I'll trust him to eventually figure out that is probably not a realistic expectation.
  • Mary Jane Watson is the Epitome of the 21st Century Woman!

Not only is she goddamn sexy gorgeous (those artists have GREAT imaginations ), a successfull model and actress, but she is strong willed, has battle demons single handedly, as well as overly aggressive fans and admirers, all without an ounce of super power.

EVERY woman should be like Mary Jane!!!

Hey, it was a hot selling item... I HAD to buy two copies! One to preserve in its packaging, and the other one for.... other uses.

That was exactly the style I thought of when I saw the pictures (yes I looked at the pictures before I read your text) Old style pin-up models being sexy but not overly so.

Who are you trying to kid Mark, you've "ruined" both copies that you bought. I'm sure Mario will buy you a 3rd one for Christmas.
