  • i had the same problem, i e-mailed them and no answer.. :(
  • i as well. no idea why canadians can't use bodog.

got this error message when i tried:

"Due to jurisdictional legalities, we are unable to permit residents of Canada to open an account at this time."
  • Must be about our money...you know, only worth a fraction of the American dollar..

Oh Wait...that was LAST month's excuse.
  • we were ahead this week :) but then we went back below again (1.008 I think) :)
  • The owner of Bodog is Canadian I believe. I think he doesn't want to be "wanted" in his home country so Canadians have never been alowed to join. That's what I heard anyway but it may be untrue.

The issue with Bodog is their Canadian interests outside of poker that they don't want to risk.

I tried to sign up on bodog and sure enough no canadians permitted. I changed my country to the US and it was allowing me to proceed. That's to bad because it looked like they have alot of WPT & WSOP Satellites. What is also funny I signed up at Doylesroom and anyone from the US is not permitted to join. Certainly strange.

I signed up yesterday. Doyle's room uses the same software as canbet and articpoker. I like to try different sites. This software is not the greatest but not to bad either. Like canbet, lots of freerolls. What is probably done is all these sites are pooled to each freeroll or table to make it seem like the site is super busy. Very smart of the software company and very smart business.
  • Many reasons why Canadians are not permitted, even though it is debatable:
    • Bodog's offices, support, and Marketing are all based in Vancouver.
    • Their site, registration and software are out of Canada.
    • Calvin Ayre (owner) maintains a residence in Vancouver which would put him in violation of Canadian law.

If their servers were also in Canada I would think they are still in violation of the law if that is there reasoning for not allowing Canadians to sign up.

You are permitted to have your operations based out of Canada. The legal side will come into play when your servers are in the same country. These websites dedicated to gambling have their servers based off shore for two reasons:

    1. They can keep all of their profits in offshore accounts. This for example acts as a benifit towards calvin since he will not have to pay taxes. (Its all about hiding the income)
    2. Once your servers are off sure all legal laws become obsolete. This in turn will generate a higher player base for companies plus let them tap into markets where it is illegal to use online gambling. You will see this in there all rights reserved section of theor websites. They will state for legal and liability purposes they do not reccomend players sign up if they live in a city or state where it is unlawful to gamble online. When my lawyers did the leagal work for my site they paid alot of attention to this for me. As long as it is there they are covered it is up to the person playing to make the decision if it is appropriate or not. This is why I thought it was very weird why bodog will not let canadians sign up. I really feel it is because of the first topic I talked about.

    What do you think?

Things are only illegal if you get caught and if the police even care. They have bigger fish to fry. For bodog to not even test the waters is ridiculous. If they allow canadians to not play for these reasons its costing them huge money. If after they operate they get heat then do as you say and move things offshore.

It is true. This is the reason. The owner Calvin Ayre is Canadian.
