Going to Turning Stone - what do I need to know?

Hey all,

I'm going up to Turning Stone next week for a couple of days to play some poker and maybe a couple of their daily tournaments. Anything I need to know before I leave (crossing the border, cool places to stop, etc.) ?

Also, I heard there is a poker rate for the hotel - can you call and ask for it or do you have to go there first and get it?

Call ahead first and ask for the poker rate but I think it is only used for the bigger tournaments they have. Very nice hotel. Alot of the younger internet pros play there as you only need to be 19 to play. The casino is dry.

They have two turnaments every day and they are very well done, find there website, it explains everything.

    I recomend it.
  • I forget what their rules are for the poker rate but I had to really fight for it when I was there to get it. They only have so many rooms and other BS because the hotel and the poker room don't co operate much.

Turning stone is alcohol free. If you want to drink brink a small cooler and score some glasses for beer or get pop for mix. The dealers are fast and (generally) don't put up with BS. If your not at the table they won't deal you in, if you delay the game they will ask you to speed up or leave. Play can range from quite good to a donk fest. depending on time of day and what else is happening at the casino.

BTW Dead Money it's 18 to play there and you need to buy a daily poker membership which is a buck a think.
  • The poker rate is $80 if you are rated with four hours play per day, at least it was a few months ago, but you have to make arrangements before you go there in order to get the rate. If you are going on a weekend or an event night you won't get a rate. It's a nice poker room, good limit and no-limit action as well as occasional other varieties of poker. Good tournaments with good turnout, when I was there they had 100+ for their daily tournament but most of the players did not play cash games after. The casino has always been dry (of alcohol), but as of a few weeks ago you can no longer even bring your own. Apparently they are attempting to get their liquor license again so they have stopped all alcohol completely, according to the State of New York it won't happen until they are willing to pay a cut of revenues. You have to buy a "membership" each day to play, it was $2 a couple of months ago. They will give you a ticket once you pay that you have to have on the table in front of you while you are playing. Lots of kids as Dead Money has said, Syracuse University and a couple of Colleges are close and oyu only have to be 18 to enter. You'll have a good time there. Great golf course too.
  • This may not matter to you... but you cannot straddle there!!

Other than that... crossing the border by car... you just need a birth cert. and photo ID. Others have covered the rest.
  • Hey Joe, I'm heading down to Turning Stone for the first Sunday in December on the way to NY. Anything further you like to add about your trip to TS? I will only be there for the 7pm tournament on the Sunday but with a rake of 30%, will likely pass. I assume they offer 1/2 NLH? Are there single table tournaments running all day? Thanks.
  • I would check out Redington's and a few others who are going down next week to play. It's been a year since I"ve been down. Dealers are fast and efficient, it is certainly among the best run rooms there. I never played any single table tourney's so I don't know about them. The 4/8 limit was exceptionally easy to beat. I did play a little 1/2 and the play was Rama style.

This is the only casino I wouldn't mind paying session fees because most dealer can do 2 orbits per shift.
  • thanks; how did the rake work last time? I called and they do offer 1/2 at $100 and $200 buyins. Personally I like the $200 buyin but maybe more action on the $100.
