Casino De Hull to get Holdem.

At long last, poker players in Quebec will be able to play live without leaving the province and without breaking any laws. A new law is slated to go into effect sometime in the fall that will allow Quebec casinos to spread Texas hold’em poker games. Prior to the law, the only variations of poker allowed were ones where the customer plays against the house, such as three card poker and Caribbean poker.

Catherine Schellenberg, spokeswoman for the Lac-Leamy Casino in Gatineau, said that the addition of poker to casinos in the province will help them compete with both their neighbors in Ontario, as well as underground, illegal poker clubs. She said that her casino’s profits fell $8 million last year, in part because potential patrons go elsewhere to play poker.

Jean-Pierre Roy, Loto-Quebec spokesman, also noted, “The Texas hold 'em poker is usually popular among young adults, so we expect it to bring customers that may not otherwise go to casinos.”

Loto-Quebec operates three casinos: Lac-Leamy, Montreal, and Charlevoix. The organization also has other gambling interests, as it operates a public lottery, a video lottery network, and a bingo network.

Finally we in the Ottawa region get to play poker at a Casino without having to travel far.

  • Anybody know the timeframe on this?
  • Sadly not, I think the article said they need at least 60 days after applying for it before they can actaully get it. So I'm thinking late Sept/Early Oct?

If one assumes that the timing will be the same as the Montreal Casino, then the date I have heard was either by Nov. 15th or Dec. 15th. There was an indepth discussion at my table at Akwasasne on Saturday night. The Montreal Casino will be getting 24 tables, supposedly somewhere in the Quebec Pavillion... which means nothing to me since I haven't been there in 12 years...

Now the bad news, or good news, depending on your point of view.

The word from someone in Montreal was.... THESE WILL BE ELECTRONIC TABLES!!!

    Have fun!!!
  • any updates? may be in Montreal in November. How is club 138? far from downtown?
  • There's no point in travelling to Montreal to play on an electronic table, but it does have one good poker tournament every year, which I remember watching on TV. The Third Annual FullTilt Poker Montreal Open will be on March 30 - April 2, 2008. Depending on the yet to be published blind structure of the rebuy tournament, I may make the trip.
