Poker & Alcohol - Q's coming from the Festival of Beer

So I just finished working at the Festival of Beer this past weekend at Old Fort York in Toronto. They had poker tables set up where they had single-table tourneys to play for a small promo prize. The game was a complete gongshow and bingo game, but it made me think a lot about people who play poker and drink at the same time, let alone drink heavily.

I've seen a lot of people who drink while playing poker and I just wonder why would someone do that? It seems like they're just there to have a good time, and throw away their money...all good for the rest of the people on the table. But would someone actually drink so that they would loosen up their play?

How would you deal with players who drink at the table?

    I think it would. The same way alchohol makes the guys brave when trying to pick up girls at the bar. :)

    Generally I loosen up against the drinkers. Unless it's Wolffhound. :)

    So.. you are trying to understand that people have different reasons for playing poker? C'mon dude, not everyone is a tight nit.. Or broke... Maybe they wanna splash around $1K to feel better about themselves?

    Recreational poker player:
    Socialize, have fun, get together with buds, meet new people, have some suds and enjoy a good game of cards while feeling decent about the world around you.


    Serious poker player:
    Drinking and poker don't mix!! It's war, and you want your wits about you at all times!!!

    If available I drink while playing. Big money game, I do not drink too much unless it is with friends..
