Found a $25/$50 game tonight that seemed pretty loose and crazy so decided to give a shot for the first time ever.

This was my first hand. Didn't take long to realize there was plenty of dead money at this level.

Ok bit of a loose call (see my cards below) but 1st hand, I don't mind the opportunity to show people that maybe I am a bit of a loose nit, plus I will have position.

That's right buddy, I raised the preflop raiser on the flop with pure air that was A9 or worse. Nice call down.

By the way I didn't lose that money. Hollywood Poker locked up on me and I had to reset and buy back in.

Chef could easily have a wide range here so I decide to 3 bet my 99 to isolate from the button but sniffer colds calls 2 bets. We will see in the last hand what a great player he is. Chef just calls, so that eliminates most of the bigger hands. Hopefully it is a smaller pair than me.

  • I'm not sure I agree with your analysis that the players are as bad as you call them out to be..

I would assume that calling down light is more prevalent in games ruled by ruthless aggression like high stakes limit games are..

Also, Hand #1 seems like WA/WB on the flop.. he was waiting for a safe turn to pop you..
  • The first hand was SH but the rest are full ring. I don't think calling down light in full ring is a good idea. If it is so aggressive then repopping is better than calling down.

Besides isn't the AA hand one of the worst played AA you have ever seen?

I also fully admit I got extremely lucky on many of these hands, but I wasn't calling down behind or check/calling superior hands.
  • Wow gj man, how much did you end up from all this? seems like quite a bit.
  • About $1500 but gave back about $800 last night to the variance gods. Zithal was watching and can attest to the 65d etc train wreck, that went something like this:

I had A9. Had to see how much everyone loved there cards. On the flush turn, I figured someone had the flush if not a set on the flop. So I left.

  • I enjoy a good limit game as well. Sometimes though it can get frustrating because of players who will reach for everything, hit their runner-runner or back door and take the pot down (good on you Joe for catching it though). Even though they may or may not get the right odds to see it down, they'll still call it down. I guess it's part of the game and one of the quirks/differences in limit. When I'm trying to 'protect' my hand against whatever draw, I cross my fingers and pray that I can avoid the draw and take down a size-able pot.

I wonder - I remember reading this in SSHE (Miller) about trying the check-raise when in early position and a bet from the cut-off/button in order to get everyone in between to pay even more for their draws. Is it really all that effective in a low limit game like 1/2 or 5/10 online?
  • Many of Miller's concepts apply to full ring. I can't recall if I have ever bothered to c/r in sh.

Are there any good sh limit books out there?

I usually play 1/2 to 3/6. If your opponents are just knowledgeable enough to know what odds are, it is very effective at those levels with the right number of people in a pot (4 or fewer, generally). By check-raising, you've halved the odds of those left to play and backdoor draws or overcards become far too expensive to play and you'll force out some better draws as well. You're pretty much committing yourself to leading out on the turn though, if in fact you do get callers.

Of course, board texture is important here. You're likely not going to push out flush chasers at those limits, who seem to press on despite the math (damn the torpedos! I'm sooted!).

They chase those flushes in No-Limit when they don't have the odds and you know they are drawing to it, why would they play different in limit?

Flush and OES draws are almost always going to have the odds to draw. But CRing can give bad odds to stuff like gutshots and overcards.
