Playing against loose passive calling stations

These players are very very very predictable. You get a bunch of them at the lowest limits offered at any casino for limit games.

I find they follow the following rules, almost unknowningly.

1. Call with any two cards in an unraised pot from any position
2. Call with any two cards (if one is paint) in a raised pot from any position
3. Raise with any two painted cards (suited or otherwise)
4. Bet if they hit top pair or two pair and will keep betting.
5. They will slow play anything larger than two pair
6. They will call you down with any pair in their hand or on the board
7. They will see the turn almost without fail, unless they have nothing and it costs two bets.
8. They will call all bets for draws, no matter what the cost.
9. They don't check raise and see no value in respecting anyone elses.

So the question is this. Since these players will essentially play all draws, and huge made hands in an identical fashion, what tools (bets, checks, re-raises) can you use to figure out where you in a hand? I know that players like this are the bread and butter of a good poker player, but they can also win some big pots because you don't give them the proper respect.

  • In Super System, Doyle Brunson says if you cant beat a calling station, you cant beat anyone. Basically, I would never try to bluff them, and when you get a strong hand bet bet bet. If they are raising you, unless you have a really strong hand, you should be able to lay it down confidentily.
  • Value bet, and keep value betting, especially on the river with mediocre hands if it doesn't complete multiple draws.

Note that your implied odds are greater so some draws which you don't have the pot odds to call for are now possible calls. Also, reverse implied odds on hands like top pair with no redraws increase so they'll get taken down more often.
